Mimicking Man-Eater Bug – #BODE-EN029

FLIP: Target 1 monster on the field; destroy it, and if you do, this card gains ATK equal to that monster’s original ATK, then you can change this card’s Type to that monster’s original Type.    Cannot be destroyed by battle. Cannot be destroyed by the effects of monsters with its same Type.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Mimicking Man-Eater Bug is the best in the “ Man-Eater Bug” line of monsters.

Same Type, Attribute, and ATK/DEF as the original Man-Eater Bug, but at Level 4 you can argue better for stuff like Rank and Synchro Summons. Same flip effect, but with added battle protection and card effect protection in line with its second effect, this is certainly a bug that’s climbed the evolutionary ladder.

Gaining ATK equal to the original ATK of the monster you destroy is good, but the battle and effect destruction protection from the same Type of monster you destroy makes Mimicking Man-Eater Bug great against single Type archetypes. It is one of those random cards you could see someone throwing into the Side Deck. Because Mimicking Man-Eater Bug changes its Type and gains that protection against monsters with that same Type it protects itself from the monster that just got destroyed by the flip.

Good monster, fun monster, certainly the best of the Man-Eater Bug monsters we’ve seen. Insect decks got a good monster here and single Type archetypes have a tough wall to deal with.

A bit of randomness this week starting with a retrain of a classic from LOB: Mimicking Man-Eater Bug.

MMEB is a Level 4 EARTH Insect Flip with 450 ATK and 600 DEF. Pretty bad stats, nice Attribute, and fine typing after recently. Anyways, of course there’s the FLIP part to target a monster on the field and destroy it, just like the old Man-Eater Bug, only now you get the other effects to have this card gain ATK equal to that monster’s original ATK and then change this card’s Type to that monster’s original Type. So at least we’re going to make this more respectable than 450 ATK assuming you destroy something with actual stats, but you’re still in the position of this likely being in Defense Position after being flipped. That’s why we get the extra effects where it cannot be destroyed in battle and it also cannot be destroyed by effects of monsters with the same Type, which explains the modification part. The battle protection is really good at least to ensure you keep your monster after it pops an opponent’s, and the effect protection is just icing on the cake, though awkward in matchups where the opponent uses various Types or monster effects that don’t destroy. Either way, this is 100% an upgrade over the original, but it’s really hard to sell me on FLIP effects in 2022. Shaddolls are fine, but they got their own ways to trigger their effects if you’re even going for them. Krawlers are also fine since they got support. This is just a one-off FLIP monster, so it’ll be harder to make good.

Mimicking Man-Eater Bug is certainly an improvement over the original.  Earth/Insect is fine, and the stats are abysmal on a Level 4 (450-600) here, but that’s irrelevant given the Effect, even if it is off a Flip.  It destroys a Monster on the Field (which is a Targeting Effect) and note, this is ANY Monster, not just one that belongs to your opponent.  So in certain situations, you can destroy your own, if you deem necessary, and go from there.  If successful, this card gains attack equal to the original attack of the Monster destroyed.  So if this guy destroys even just a 2000 attack Monster, he’s going to have 2450 attack after, and that’s nothing to scoff at.  There’s potential here for sure.  You also have the option to change the Type of this card to the Type of the Monster you destroyed.  Which is fun, and fits the Mimic in the name, but may not be much overall help most of the time.  But an Effect like that can have a place too.  Battle Immunity is always a fun thing, more so if this guy gets a massive attack, as your opponent is going to likely have to use an Effect to take this down (say if the attack gets to the 3000 or higher range) and we have Immunity to Effect destruction from Monsters of the same Type, making the prior Effect that much sweeter.  The little guy really does a lot, and the Flip here is the only part that concerns me.  You’re not ALWAYS going to get that Flip off, and without it, there’s not much else here.

This week is potpourri week, covering some miscellaneous cards we’ve missed that might be worth mentioning. Our first card is Mimicking Man-Eater Bug, a retrain of the classic monster, introduced in Burst of Destiny. Unlike its original form, MMEB is a level 4 EARTH insect flip monster, being 2 levels higher than the original. While being level 4 does make it slightly better for the rank 4 XYZ toolbox, MMEB still has the same pitiful stats as the original, a laughable 450 attack and 600 defense. Though, at least 600 defense means it’s searchable by Cupid Pitch?

MMEB’s flip effect is a massive upgrade to the original; when flipped, you target and destroy one monster on the field, allowing MMEB to gain attack equal to that monster’s original attack as well as becoming that monster’s type (hence “mimicking”!). Additionally, MMEB can’t be destroyed by battle at all and it can’t be destroyed by monster effects of monsters with the same type, almost guaranteeing that it’ll go off if your opponent attacks. Hypothetically, this guy can wreak massive havoc on mono-type decks, and with support from King of the Heavenly Sky Prison, flip monsters are slightly less of a liability nowadays. Unfortunately, MMEB is still a flip monster, and there’s nothing stopping MMEB from being banished, bounced, or otherwise destroyed by a monster with a different type, and it doesn’t really function as a combo piece in any deck. I can see it being used as a funny tech in a casual insect or flip deck at least.

Art: 3/5 Not sure if I prefer how scary the original looked, but the new pose and bright background do give it some more personality.
