Mirri the Cursed

Mirri the Cursed’s original art is frightening enough, but I think I like Filip Burburan’s version better. Kev Walker often has little or no backgrounds in his art of characters, and on top of that, we now see her diving onto her victim from the skyship Predator. There is no-one on any plane who wouldn’t find that unsettling.

Mirri is one of the few characters in Magic we’ve seen as both a hero and a villain – and perhaps the only character who’s equally cool in both roles. While this version is technically from Planar Chaos‘ alternate reality and the mainline version of her is a hero, there’s no reason you can’t play the cursed version and get a lot from doing so. She has enough keywords to dominate almost anything that costs less than her, and more than a few things that cost more than her. And opponents who try to stop her by throwing things in her way just make the situation worse. If this card makes for heavy-hearted games for story aficionados, it makes up for it by winning games easily.

Mirri, Cat Warrior

Planar Chaos gave us some alternate takes on beloved characters, and Mirri the Cursed is a fallen version of the beloved cat warrior from the original Weatherlight saga. Turns out that vampiric powers are a bit of a boon to this one; this Mirri is very good at separating faces from bodies, thanks to decent combat stats and evasion. 3 first strike power takes out a lot of flying threats, and it gets bigger for killing creatures in combat; while it’s generally preferable to just go for the throat, you can hold Mirri back as an effective defensive deterrent.

Mirri is strong, though she has the issue of being just too expensive for Modern in the current day and age. Her costing three mana would be a massive boon, and while it’s not implausible to get her to work, she’s still vulnerable enough to removal to make it an investment that pays fewer dividends than one might like.

Constructed: 3
Casual: 4
Limited: 4.5
Multiplayer: 3
Commander: 3.25 (her combination of keywords is uncommon in black, and she can definitely snowball hard if supported)
