You can Tribute 1 other Effect Monster; Special Summon up to 3 “Ice Barrier Tokens” (Aqua/WATER/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0), and if you do, increase this card’s Level by that number, also you cannot Special Summon from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except WATER Synchro Monsters. If this card is sent to the GY: You can add 1 of your “Ice Barrier” cards that is banished or in your Deck to your hand, except “Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier”. You can only use each effect of “Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier” once per turn.

Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier starts off an Ice Barrier week on Pojo with the new support from Battle of Legends: Terminal Revenge.

Level 2 Aqua Type joins a few others within the archetype, increasing the chances of Toadally Awesome. Token-producing in a Synchro-based deck is a great option, especially when the Tuner can increase its Level. Trading one effect monster other than itself for up to three tokens and then increase its Level for every token produced, you are left with three tokens and a Level 5 Tuner ready to go into a Level 8 WATER Synchro. Locking you into that Attribute it par for the course and there’s plenty of them in the archetype and outside it to choose from. You also have a few monsters that can Special Summon themselves to aid Mirror Mage and even be used as tribute for their effect. Because it only has to be an effect monster, this is where tech cards come into play to fuel that requirement. Also, the tokens are considered “Ice Barrier” monsters, making them eligible to fulfill requirements of Spell/Trap cards and monster effects within the archetype.

Mirror Mage is a RoTA for the Banished Zone or the Deck when sent to the graveyard. Getting you an Ice Barrier card off being sent to the graveyard pays for the monster you tribute for their token effect, and you can merely send them to the graveyard when you Synchro Summon using them and the tokens they produced. Frozen Domain (which we will review Wednesday) is a great defensive card that can also be an offensive card for you, while Winds of the Ice Barrier can be a sort of Gem Abundance-style card for Ice Barriers. Finally, Magic Triangle of the Ice Barrier is an easy Special Summon/spot removal 2-in-1 Spell if you have three Ice Barrier monsters in your hand.

Archetypes love token-producing cards. With the amount of Synchro Summoning this deck can do and synchro climbing, a card like that was needed. Trade an effect monster for a potential Level 8 WATER Synchro Monster is incredibly in your favor. You may be locked into WATER Synchro Monsters for the turn, but you can do a lot with that.

I’m always glad when Konami revisits the Duel Terminal archetypes, and we finally got the Terminal World support for 4 of the old Duel Terminal themes. While some already got recent support, like Ice Barriers this week getting the Structure Deck a few years back, others like Infernoid and Ritual Beast could use the modern stuff they got, and next week we’ll see Konami finally make another archetype, Genex, playable. Anyways, Ice Barriers this week and we’re starting with Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier.

Mirror Mage is a Level 2 WATER Aqua Tuner with 1000 ATK and 400 DEF. Low stats are whatever on Level 2 monsters, WATER is pretty solid, and Level 2 Aqua means Toadally Awesome. You can tribute another Effect Monster to summon up to 3 Ice Barrier Tokens (Aqua/WATER/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0) to your field, with this also gaining a Level for each Token summoned, but you can only summon WATER Synchros from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn. Turning a single monster into three is pretty good to build up some Synchro Material, especially when this card’s Level is also being increased from 2 all the way to potentially 5 if you summon enough Tokens. This is potentially a Level 8 Synchro on its own, but good chance you’ll have more cards to use to help make other Synchros as well. Being locked to WATER Synchros can be specific, but there’s at least some pretty good ones, with this support wave adding to that. Other effect triggers when sent to the graveyard, letting you search for any Ice Barrier card from the Deck or that’s banished, besides Mirror Mage. This means you can access any other monster in the Deck to extend your plays, or even the Spell & Trap lineup. You can use Winds Over the Ice Barrier to tribute the Tokens for bigger Ice Barriers, or Medallion of the Ice Barrier to search. In Spright, you can even send this off of Swap Frog to search for Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier to revive this and make Toadally Awesome. Putting this into the grave should be easy as well, especially considering it’s a Tuner, meaning you can Synchro with it, but there’s ways to pitch it from the hand or Deck to the grave as well. Hard once per turn on each effect, of course. Mirror Mage is probably the best of the new Ice Barrier cards for providing so much extra Synchro fodder as well as being another way to search the entire Deck for any Ice Barrier card you need. It also makes a cute package in Spright with Swap Frog and Freezing Chains for Toadally Awesome access. In Ice Barriers, however, I feel like you play 3 of this.

This week we’re starting our coverage of the namesake support waves from Terminal Revenge– the set imports cards from the aptly-named Terminal World set from the OCG, which gave a much-needed boost to some fan-favorite Duel Terminal archetypes. First in line is Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier for the Ice Barrier archetype, a level 2 WATER Aqua Tuner monster. You can grab it with Medallion of the Ice Barrier or Revealer of the Ice Barrier, though the most practical usage will be sending it straight to the Graveyard with Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier, and the reason will be apparent soon enough! With only 1000 attack and 400 defense, its stats are pretty bad, but fortunately it doesn’t have any floodgate effects so there’s no reason to protect it anyway.

Mirror Mage has two hard once per turn effects, the first letting you tribute any other Effect monster you control to Special Summon up to three Ice Barrier tokens (level 1 WATER Aqua monsters with 0 attack and defense) then increase Mirror Mage’s level by the same number of tokens, locking you into WATER Synchro monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of the turn. For Ice Barrier itself, this is a very welcome effect for summoning your Synchro monsters, since their odd levels means you pretty much-needed level modulation of some kind without awkward combo lines. It’s also a very convenient way to get rid of useless combo pieces that have already done their job like Bahamut Shark and Marincess Coral Anemone– the latter of which, coincidentally, can revive Mirror Mage. The more important effect is the second effect, which triggers when Mirror Mage is sent to the Graveyard, letting you search any Ice Barrier card or recycle one from the Banishment. In Ice Barrier combo lines, you’ll classically send it off of Hexa Spirit, giving you a search and setting up a level 6 Synchro Summon or enabling Toadally Awesome if you started with Revealer, kicking off your bread and butter combo lines. Both effects are absolutely fantastic, which will be a recurring theme with the Terminal World support. Playing three copies sounds like a horrendous idea on paper, but OCG lists have seen success running three copies since you can conveniently turn it into Salamangreat Almiraj for a decent emergency combo into Adamancipator Risen – Dragite.

-Synchro lock can be problematic if you use it too early in a combo
