Mitsurugi Great Purification – #SUDA-EN096

When your opponent activates a card or effect: Tribute 1 Level 5 or higher Reptile monster; negate that effect, and if you do, destroy that card. You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 Reptile monster in your GY; Special Summon it, and if you do, Tribute 1 other monster you control. You can only use 1 “Mitsurugi Great Purification” effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Mitsurugi Great Purification is the only Trap Card in the archetype so far, but offers great support.

A Normal Trap, Purification can negate and destroy any card or effect your opponent plays. You must tribute a Level 5 or higher Reptile for the cost, which is where the Ogdoadic archetype can come into play to offer tribute fodder for this card, though you’ll be willing to tribute either of your Ritual Monsters within the archetype as both will Special Summon themselves back after getting you a search. Something like Liberator Eto could also be tributed. Trading this card and a Reptile to negate and destroy something your opponent’s will only be a -1 to you if your effect off the Reptile you tribute doesn’t go through. Ogdoadic can bring themselves back from the graveyard so not immediately benefiting from them isn’t a problem either.

Wouldn’t be an archetype-specific card nowadays without a Graveyard effect. Banish Purification to reborn a Reptile of yours and then tribute any monster you control. Another way to tribute one of your Mitsurugi monsters to trigger their tribute effect(s). Purification does specify “1 other monster” so you cannot use this effect on the monster you brought back to gain advantage. However, with Friday’s CoTD, you can use this on the opponent’s turn to bring the Ritual Monster back and nuke the board, pretty great interaction between you and the opponent.

Tribute theme was going to be used within the effects. Good bit of negation that works in conjunction with the tribute theme. Would liked it if the second effect had been optional on the tribute side, because if you don’t have another monster on your side of the field this grave effect is useless. It was nice though that they allowed you to tribute any monster and not only a Reptile.

Midweek for Mitsurugi brings us a Trap that you can search to disrupt the opponent: Mitsurugi Great Purification.

Great Purification is a Normal Trap that when your opponent activates a card or effect, you can tribute a Level 5 or higher Reptile to negate that effect and destroy that card. So it’s omni-negation with the main downside being that it isn’t a Counter Trap, but I guess that’s fine. Having a Level 5 or higher Reptile on field isn’t difficult with your Rituals, who will revive themselves and search after tributing them for this. If you run an Ogdoadic version of this Deck, you also got your big Ogdoadics to tribute as well if needed. You can also banish this card from the graveyard to target a Reptile monster in your graveyard and Special Summon it and then tribute another monster you control, getting a Reptile back wihle hopefully tributing a Mitsurugi for its effect, or just revive and tribute said Mitsurugi and you’ll likely get whatever effect it has anyways. One effect per turn and only once that turn is honestly fair with how strong these effects can be. It’s a highly searchable card that doesn’t add to your combos, and you can recover it for reuse, so you only need 1, but it’s a good 1-of for this Deck.

What’s with TCG and giving their decks Normal Trap negates? Not that I’m complaining here! Next up is Mitsurugi Great Purification, a Normal Trap for the Mitsurugi archetype. While Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji will search it perfectly fine, it’s much better off searching Mitsurugi Prayers or Mitsurugi Ritual, so you’ll instead want to grab Great Purification with the Tribute effect of the Ritual monsters instead towards the end of your combo. It comes with a pair of hard once per turn one per turn effects, so you can’t use them both in the same turn, though it’s much smarter to hold its Graveyard effect for later anyway. Great Purification’s first effect is used in response to any of your opponent’s card or effect activations, letting you Tribute a level 5 or higher Reptile monster (IE your Rituals) to simply negate that effect and destroy the card. People gave flack to Libromancer Intervention for not being a Counter Trap, but fortunately Great Purification is still good even as a Normal Trap; Tributing any of your Ritual monsters will let you immediately revive them thanks to their common effect, and you’ll even get a search out of it as a bonus. Their main boss monster in particular will be able to activate its Special Summon effect to get even more value. Great Purification’s other effect, its Graveyard effect, will let you banish it from your Graveyard to Special Summon a Reptile from your Graveyard, then you’ll be forced to Tribute another monster you control. While you can’t use this on the same turn as its first effect, this is much better used on your own turn as follow-up, since you’ll be able to revive combo pieces like Saji to kickstart combos, or you can revive their main boss monster (again) for a monster wipe. Of course, you can also hold it for your opponent’s turn for yet another way to Special Summon the aforementioned boss monster. This’ll be your main disruption enabler when using Mitsurugi as a package in Ryzeal; while it’s less important in pure builds, it’s still a very strong card since omni negates are always strong disruptions. Don’t forget that Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Kusanagi can recycle it (if you don’t use the Graveyard effect, anyway), so there’s not much benefit to playing more than 1 copy.

+Solid disruption with an omni negate
+Graveyard effect is excellent as both follow-up and as another enabler for Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi
-Basically requires a Mitsurugi Ritual or an Ogdoadic package to make live
-Can lead to awkward sequencing when Tributing Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi
