Hello Pojo Fans,

Mitsurugi Ritual is a pretty good Ritual Spell when you look at what it can do in the scope of what Ritual Spells can typically do.

Searched with Saji or Ritual-based support, Mitsurugi Ritual has two ways to Ritual Summon. If you choose the Deck option, you tribute Reptiles from your hand or on the field. You probably searched this card off Saji, so there’s half your Levels right there. You do need to equal the Level of the Ritual Monster you intend to summon, it doesn’t have that great option to go over the Level requirement. The other option is to Ritual Summon a Reptile Ritual Monster from your hand through tributing two Reptiles from your Deck, eliminating the need of having the tributes at the ready and deck thinning by two at the bare minimum (both Mitsurugi effects will trigger so you will plus). Either option is good and ensures you are covered regarding your game-state to Ritual Summon one of your Reptile Ritual Monsters.

You are required to use Reptile monsters for the Ritual Summon, so it prevents any archetype that is non-Reptile from benefiting you through the Ritual Spell. Despite that, you can tribute either of your Ritual Reptile Monsters to summon the other and those monsters have tribute effect(s) as well. The one we won’t review, Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi, can Special Summon itself back off being tributed and will get you a Mitsurugi search along with it, so no card advantage is lost. Tributing this to summon the other from Deck will get you two big bodies on board with a good amount of card advantage.

Next up this week is the archetypal Ritual Spell for the Mitsurugi archetype, simiply named Mitsurugi Ritual.

Mitsurugi Ritual is a Ritual Spell that can be used to Ritual Summon any Reptile Ritual by using one of two effects that you can each use once a turn. So far the only two Reptile Rituals in the game belong to Mitsurugi, with more likely coming, though I can also expect a generic Reptile Ritual once the OCG gets this stuff. Anyways, with this Ritual Spell you can either summon your Ritual from the Deck by tributing monsters from your hand or field whose combined Levels equal that of the Ritual Monster or you can instead summon one from your hand by tributing up to 2 Reptile monsters from your hand, Deck, or field whose total Levels equal that of your Ritual. So overall you’re likely going to get to use your Deck for your Ritual Summon, whether it’s for your Ritual itself or the fodder to summon it. Being able to use both effects in a turn should also let you summon the two archetypal Rituals they have, as well as using the tribute effect of one of said Rituals to get a search and revive said monster if you already properly summoned it. Using exact Levels is also fine when their Rituals are all Level 8 and we are working with only Level 4 monsters in archetype, same goes for Ogdoadic and their Level 4 and 8 monsters. Only real negative is this can’t combine with Pre-Preparation of Rites due to not mentioning any of the Ritual Monsters, and your Rituals being Level 8 means you can’t use Preparation of Rites. Either way, it isn’t like Mitsurugi is deserpate for consistency with all the good Reptile stuff there is. You don’t have to play 3 Ritual I think, depends how dedicated to Mitsurugi you are, but having 3 also won’t hurt in most of the variants either way.

I’ve heard enough about cheating! A modern Ritual archetype needs an equally modern Ritual Spell, and Mitsurugi is no different thanks to Mitsurugi Ritual, its in-house Ritual Spell. The main way you’ll want to get to it is through Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji, but you can also get to it through the Tribute effect of your Ritual monsters if you need follow-up. Mitsurugi Ritual can Ritual Summon any Reptile Ritual monster…which currently only contains the Mitsurugi Ritual monsters, so in practice you’re stuck with Mitsurugis for the time being. On activation, you can use 1 of its 2 effects, both of them being hard once per turn so you’ll essentially be able to use Mitsurugi Ritual twice as long as you use different effects. The first one will let you Ritual Summon a Reptile Ritual monster from your deck by Tributing the appropriate materials from your hand or field that equal the appropriate level. The other effect is the exact inverse, Tributing the materials from your deck instead to Ritual Summon a Reptile Ritual monster from your hand. This is an exquisitely powerful way to Ritual Summon that sidesteps one of the main pitfalls of Ritual decks: being a bare minimum 3 cards combo, which means Ritual decks often need extremely aggressive search power to even do the bare minimum. Of course, Mitsurugi itself is also aggressive, considering all of their Ritual monsters search any Mitsurugi card when Tributed, which you can do with many of their Spells and Traps! Currently, in Ryzeal hybrids, the goal is to use Saji to search Mitsurugi Ritual, use King of Feral Imps to search their boss monster, then summon it using Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi as material, which will let you grab Mitsurugi Prayers to enable their boss’s disruption or another Mitsurugi Ritual for more explosive combos. In pure builds or more Reptile-focused builds, you can send Night Sword Serpent as a body if necessary. It’s a fantastic card that needs a bit of work, but that’s to be expected for a Ritual archetype; in a rare case of Ritual Spells, it’s so important that even Ryzeal hybrids play 3 copies, and I’m inclined to agree no matter what Mitsurugi deck you’re playing. We’ll see after Alliance Insight hits the shelves though.

+Versatile summoning effect that can access either the Ritual monster or the materials from deck
+Can effectively be used twice per turn in some combo routes
-Still requires accessing the summoning target or appropriate materials
-Relies on Saji and Tributing your Ritual monsters for reliable access
