Monument to Endurance is another part of a theme you might have noticed in Aetherdrift, not least in Captain Howler from yesterday. It’s rather like the joke about “whenever you do something you wanted to do anyway, draw a card”, but looking for discard in general is an underused mechanic in Magic, and that makes the card appealing and rather novel for deckbuilders. I will say that it’s definitely not the end of a combo in itself, more like the second or even third part of a synergy or an engine, so you’ll want to be careful about how you build with it. It’s interesting to me that it can even be a form of protection against opposing discard abilities – that’s not nothing, though it’s perhaps somewhat slow when facing the most powerful examples like Duress.

Monument to Endurance attracted a bit of attention from the outset because of how it can turn discard outlets and cycling into quite the advantage. While none of the effects on their own are amazing, keep in mind that you’re getting it on top of whatever else triggered the discard, and all three are good incremental advantage abilities with the fun side-effect of triggering on an opponent’s turn/ This won’t win awards for being flashy, but it’s a good workhorse card that has a lot of engines it plays well alongside. Just don’t run it alone without a means to the end, as this won’t push the game farther alone.
