The concept of a changeling “lord” who gives bonuses to every tribe is a very exciting one, and I must say I’m a little surprised we didn’t see it way back in Lorwyn. It might have been deemed too powerful and/or too confusing, but late is better than never, and I really like what Morophon is offering. In the first place, there are plenty of tribes for whom his Glorious Anthem effect will result in an overrunning turn that rivals anything in mono-green – you can even use him for token-based tribes like Saprolings and Servos which excel at generating enormous numbers of themselves. And in different tribes, untapping with him in play will often result in a turn where you play about a hundred creatures for free or close to free. Keep a particular eye open for bigger cards that he makes cost exactly zero – the likes of Child of Alara, Horde of Notions, Atraxa, and Cromat.

A tribal lord for every tribe, even the tribes without lords, Morophon is pretty nifty as a creature. It gives a colored mana discount to every spell of the chosen creature type (which does have interactions with the Lorwyn-era Tribal spells), and it even buffs those creatures. It’s also passable in battle: a 7-mana 6/6 is nothing special, but the combat buff to your other creatures is pretty awesome, it benefits from other tribe-buffing effects, and it’s just seven generic mana. Morophon, the Boundless is one of those creatures that is amazing in more casual settings; seven mana is usually what you’d expect to pay to end the game in Modern, and it rarely provides that…but it can make for some crazy plays and has a home in any tribal-centric deck.
