Set Review: Dream Legacy
May 10, 2007
First, let me voice a few complaints about the
set. If you've looked at the forum board, you're probably as
ticked as I and the guy who voiced the complaint (his or her
name's OtakuV on the forum). As a fan of the show, I'm a
little disappointed that the set missed cards that should've
been in sets twice if the game really followed the show.
Example: Gaara's half-demon form and Shukaku would've been
featured in Revenge and Rebirth along with Sand Shuriken,
the new Sand Jutsu in Dream Legacy and even Wind Ball and
Water Ball (Wind Ball is Shukaku's attack, Water Ball
Gamabunta's). Also, it would've been nice to see that hybrid
transformation Jutsu Naruto does into the Nine-Tailed Fox.
Now that they've missed putting in Rasengan, I'm just
miffed, regardless of the fact that it wasn't made in sets 9
and 10 in Japan. In my view, bandai missed the chance to
rectify some mistakes. That said, let's show you the cards
that are in Dream Legacy.
I'm going to go ahead and pull out the cards that can't be
used in the set: Ice Style: Black Dragon Blizzard (requires a
ninja that hasn't come out yet), Wind Style: Infinite
Sandstorm Jutsu (missing the version of Gaara and Shukaku to
make this playable) and Shu (Actually his effect is
worthless until Rasengan comes out). That said, let's start
the reviews. I think we'll all be happy for the most part
with what we do have.
Ninjas
The following ninjas look like they'll make an impact in the
game: Naruto (both versions when Rasengan comes out),
Sakura (finally a Turn 0 you play because you want to),
Anbu (pump-up is always nice), Kakashi (anti-Itachi),
Kurenai(Run Turn 4 Asuma), Asuma (run the Turn 4 Kurenai for
best results), Might Guy (becomes a 7/0 against Itachi and
Kakashi), of course Tsunade(an 8/1 both of which have a bad
effect due to it), Shizune(negates Tsunade's bad effects),
Kisame(a Chakra Absorption on a stick, great for MonoWater
Chakra control), Itachi(his effect means that as long as
Kakashi, Sasuke or the man himself aren't in play, he can
chump-block all day long), Konohamaru (anti-Mission),
Mitate(Iyashi's effect for blockers), Gamatatsu(to run that
Ninja Toad deck), Big Brother (anti-Mission), Kabuto
Yakushi(has a built-in Stone Bullet that makes opposing his
team a pain), Orochimaru(the ultimate skill-tester),
Jiraiya(easier to get than his last incarnations although
you don't want to attack with him the first turn he's
out),the new summons (Gamabunta, Manba and Katsuya) and the
new Platoon Ninja(Iruka and Naruto are a Turn 1 Chunnin,
Jiraiya and Naruto are possibly a Turn 5, Sakura and Ino are
even better if you run either in a Sharingan deck and
Tsunade and Shizune have great stats and allow you to get
two new cards while putting two you don't need on the bottom
of your deck). One could also add Tsume Izunuka and Kuromaru
to the list for the fact that they make Beast decks stronger
but that's more for casual or limited (they make a great
combo in limited)and Ninja Toad(a Turn 4 Gama with better
stats basically). The others just don't do it for me. Dan
and Nawaki both can net you two cards, but I'd like them to
stick around. The new Sasuke is okay, but cheating out
Itachi with Jonin's Intervention is a better idea even if it
is forseeable. St. Simon(?) is just a vanilla Chunin who
could be End of the Demon fodder, but then the Demon
Brothers are better for that. Homura and Koharu would be
worth it if they had stats or didn't require the Turn 5
slot(they don't even have a rank). Tonton's ability would be
ranked higher if the female ninja she helped summon had a
card to help cheat them out(and if I find the Mission to do
it, I'll say add it to the Kunoichi deck). Finally is
Gantetsu, whose biteback doesn't make his ability worth it
although I could see a combo with the new Orochimaru. Take a
look at the recommended cards and even give the others a
look to see what you think of them.
Missions
Missions of merit include Research Tour(helps arrange the
next three draws you have), No Interest( the answer to
Counter Missions like Stay Out of This), Too Much Baggage(
can be a decent stall card if you can make it work), Tragic
Clan(anti-Sasuke and Kakashi), Fratricide(get rid of the
useless ninja to get more cards), Catch-Out(anti-Mission,
other one for Fire), Coronation Ceromony(combine with the
Client it's built around), 3 Don'ts For Ninja(can really
screw up a Turn), Festival(permanent version of Kakashi's
Foresight and allows the use of Disaster of the Nine-Tailed
Fox and After the Battle), Three-Cornered Deadlock(search
those Gamabuntas, Mandas and Katsuyas), Unfading
Affection(screw over 8 Trigrams to name a few), Leaf
Village's Great Athletic Competition and Just Recovered(anti-Healing)
and Failed Jutsu(foil the use of a Jutsu). The others aren't
worth the slots reserved for Missions.
Jutsus
The Jutsus that will make an impact more than likely are:
Ice Style: Tsubame Snowstorm(Water now has a decent power-up
card), Ice Style: Wolf Fang Avalanche Jutsu(MonoWater
Control really likes this one), Sealing Jutsu:Fire
Seal(combos in a Fire/Earth Deck to reuse Fire Jutsus),
Water Shark Bomb(a splashable Water Dragon Jutsu), Chakra
Control Device(can make Water/ Earth control possible),
Ninja Fist Sword(a lot of ninjas have Weapon combat
attribute plus the ability to make it better is nice),
Needle Jizo(Anti-Damage for Lightning), Chakra Scalpel(best
when used by Kabuto, Shizune or Tsunade/Shizune Platoon),
and Healing Technique(does what it says). I wanted to
include character specific Jutsus in their own class as
these will be useful if and only if the player can draw them
at the right time and one cannot depend on luck. However,
many don't disappoint. The ones around Itachi are the best
in my opinion, Kaleidescope Sharingan(Japanese Mangekyou
Sharingan if you've been reading my columns) is a better and
cheaper Crescent Moon Dance, Tsukiyomi, Nightmare Realm
works kinda like 8 Trigrams but is even better and Amaterasu
is like the original Sharingan only better. Kidomaru's
Spider Web is decent but Water has better and Shark Skin is
more like the original Parasitic Insects Jutsu. Sakura
Blizzard is like Great Fan only it is cheaper(you don't have
to pay for the powerup) and requires Sakura(which is not
that great). Infinite Sandstorm Devastation is for now
unusable but when the new Gaaras hit, the Jutsu fill work
like a Giant Vortex Jutsu(by the way, Gaara doesn't go demon
form again until either episode 219 or 220). Toad Flame
Bombs is like a super Dragon Flame Jutsu and Coiling is a
cheaper Water form of Dragon Flame Jutsu. Hidden Needles
could work but then again maybe not. Oh yes Acid Slime also
works like Manda's Coiling and Summoning Jutsu for Katsuya
is possibly the best one.
Clients
They reprinted Tsunami(they should've used that slot for
rasengan but oh well), but the others are okay. The one with
the most potential is Shu, but since Rasengan wasn't printed
yet, we have to wait until September to make use of Shu. The
others are decent but none can really replace a ninja.
That's it. Look for the wind review next, and be on the
lookout for new decks. I'm gonna work on my Fire/Earth
control deck and turn my Water/Wind into a Medical Ninja
deck. Other new decks will be out soon and old deck will see
a makeover. See ya.
