The Dos and Don'ts of Deck Buidling
Hey gang, I've had a
crazy life lately, but things are starting to slow down
in my neck of the woods. For a long time, though, I've
been building decks that were both good and bad and
finding out why the decks were the way they were.
That's why I've decided to help people starting in the
game and players who can use the reminders on
deck-building (I certainly can) with a list of dos and
don'ts on deck building. With that said, here's the
list of deck-building tips that can help make a decent
deck better and a good deck really shine.
1.First and Foremost,
Do read the rules on deck-building. Naruto CCG has
really simple deck-building rules-40 cards maximum, 25
Ninja limit. Basically you can have 25 ninja and put in
however many of any other card typoe you want. That
means you don't necessarily need Missions, but they
help. Oh and don't forget the 3 copies of a card rule.
2. Speaking of card
copies, Don't put in a single copy of something unless
there is a good reason for it. Example, my Fire/Earth Aggro
Control deck inspired by a deck I helped fix(I forgot
your name but thanks for the deck send) ahs one copy of
Sasuke Uchiha, Energizing the Body and one copy of
Shikamaru Nara, IQ over 200. I also have 2 copies of
Sasuke Uchiha, Reason for Late Arrival and 2 Shikamaru
Nara, Smarty Pants to abuse the Growth mechanic.
Why did I have one copy of the Sasuke and Shikamaru? I
play either my 0 turn Sasuke or Shikamaru and on Turn 1
Growth them. Single copies are usually thrown in for
randomness(random stuff tends to take slots that can be
given to cards that help your deck), to hold a slot for
something else(and are replaced) or because people plan
on getting another copy of it soon(in my case Tsunade in
my Wind/Water deck). Throw in at least two copies of
stuff so you have a better chance of drawing it,
especially if it is a key card to your deck. That way,
you are more than likely to draw it.
3. Do keep in mind that all win conditions currently revolve around battle. Sucessors needs an Outstanding Victory, The Fastest Ones needs 9 Battle rewards and the standard amount of Battle Rewards is 10. This is why Kakashi Hatake, Early Settlement is one of the best cards in the game in my opinion as he allows you to cheat and get Battle Rewards whether or not you can take a direct shot at the opponent. Make sure your deck can win Battle Rewards through the combination of brute strength and the tricks that Jutsus, Missions and Ninja Effects offer. 4. Speaking of card effects, Don't underestimate a card untried. While some cards have effects that are obvious in the fact they are detrimental to your game, others have effects that may seem detrimental until you try them out. Shino Aburame, Original Opponent, is an example. My pojo friends judged him, well, harshly, but I used him in my Wind/Water deck and won some games playtesting my deck against the fledgiling Fire/Earth deck I was running at the time. Sure he's a Turn 1 ninja and sure his effect is suicide, but if his effect allows Baki to go through unchallenged, you get two Battle Rewards and they discard a ninja. Never underestimate a card just because it looks weak on its own. Many cards in Naruto combo with others and discovering those combos can make your deck more effective-see the Rock Lee, Releasing the Gates/Jonin's Intervention/powerful Jonin usually named Kakashi but may include Itachi as well.
5. Don't limit
yourself to a certain element just because your favorite
character is part of the element. Example-Gaara of the
Desert. I first tried to build a Sand deck and failed
horribly. It sucked due to the fact that I rarely go
Gaara when I had a Sand Jutsu and ended up using a lot
of my Sand Jutsus as Chakra. So I quested for a deck I
liked and found an idea that intrigued me, a Water/Wind
Ninja Control deckthat revolved around Zabuza and Baki
and discarding ninja. After that, I moved my Water/Wind
deck to a Medical ninja deck(I kind hate it but I'm
going to try it once I get my second Tsunade) and my
Fire/Earth Aggro Control(started as a Byakugan Aggro
deck with The Third and Reaper Death Seal but now is a
Sharingan base). I've pretty much played around with
every idea including a brief stint with Fire/Lightning
Aggro(traded my Kakashi/Guy Platoon and it died from
there). If you watch the show, know this: The card game
can never really depict the essence of awesomeness that
is some of the battles in Naruto, but it gets close.
Neither can it depict the awesomeness of some of the
characters, although it has gotten close. By the way,
here's hoping that One-Tailed Naruto and Curse Mark Lv.2
Sasuke are depicted in the awesomeness that are their
transformations, but don't get your hopes up kids.
6. Do realize that it
is just a game. If you lose, work on improving your
deck or practice more. Some games are lost by sheer
stupidity. Example- I lost a game because I could've
Wind Sycthe Jutsued an 8 Trigrams and stopped the Jutsu
but I forgot about it sitting in my hand. That happens
folks. Don't get mad at your opponent. After all, it's
all friendly competition anyways and the real prize is
the time you spent enjoying doing something you like
doing.
I'll end on that.
That's really the basics, but the game's more complex
than that. I'll explain that next article, but if ever
need deck help, you can email me at
zeno9d9@yahoo.com. I know Meb's doing deck fixes,
but if he's busy (completely understandable we all have
lives outside of what we do for pojo) you can
always contact me. You guys have a great summer and
I'll write soon.~Swordmaster13
