Eternal Rivalry:
The Changing Face of Naruto Part 1
July 25, 2007

Hi, everyone, it's been a while since I chimed in, but this time we take a look at the new set and what you can expect from it when game day finally hits.  I personally am impressed with the American versions of the cards we got.  I like the fact a few fan favs were made easier to get like the Sannin and the Akatsuki members specifically.  It's also nice to see that Lightning is finally graced with some power that will at least help it stand on its own, even if it still lacks a negation Jutsu that has the ease of use of staples like Hidden Mist Jutsu and Disguise Jutsu to name a few, but we will be seeing some new stuff.  This one's kinda long as the review will be pretty in-depth, but if you bare with me, you'll at least come out a little more knowledgeable.

Ninjas

For those of you who haven't seen the card list yet, I'm going to show the gems in the set bandai didn't promote as well as update you on the ones they did.  Here's a list of what you'll play and what you probably won't want to.

-Naruto Uzumaki: We unfortunately didn't get a Naruto with Clone Status this set, but we do have some very playable Narutos, especially for Toad decks.  Your average Mono-Lightning Toad deck will want to play Results of the Training to search out a Summoning Jutsu with which to play Gamabunta. if he's opposed by a Wind or Water ninja.  We also got Comrade's Danger, which can send one of your opponent's in-play Permanent Mission cards to the Chakra Pile to give him +2/+0 if he is opposed in battle by a Fire or Water ninja.  Combine Comrade's Danger with Second Proctor to take down your opponent's Chakra and their Mission for more fun.

-Sasuke Uchiha: We finally got a decent card around Sasuke's Curse Mark, but the real gem of the three Sasukes in the set is Chidori for the Revenge, the rare Sasuke.  If he is opposed by a Fire ninja, you can search the top 5 cards of you deck for a Chidori and put it into your hand, then shuffle your deck.  A searcher for Chidori is nice.  Will it make it into Freedori decks? Only time will tell, but it does make a good sideboard card for Freedori decks looking to adapt to a mirror match may like this card.

-Sakura Haruno: The two cards that stand out to me are Control of Chakra and A Double Personality.  Control of Chakra allows you to exchange 2 cards in your Discard Pile with two cards in your Chakra Pile, which may help if you want to play a Jutsu but don't have the right type(s) of Chakra at the right moment.  A Double Personality allows you to exchange out your hand with the same number of cards from the top of your deck, which can help you if you need a certain Jutsu but don't have it in your hand.  All in all, both Sakuras may help ease the burdens of battle.

-Kakashi Hatake: Team Leader Kakashi is another Kakashi looking to exploit the Growth mechanic, but it won't do what Instant Detection does.  Think the Third Hokage, Addressing Past Wrongs instead for Jutsu.  You can discard this Kakashi to negate a Jutsu your opponent plays.  If a powerful and dangerous Jutsu is heading your way, use Kakashi's effect to negate it.  It's especially useful if your opponent is trying to Trigrams or Vortex a ninja using a Jutsu that would win you the game.  Extra negation is always welcome and Kakashi gives it to you on a big ninja.

-Formation Ino-Shika-Cho: We've reviewed these guys already and I can't help but warn you: Watch out for the combination of Ino and Shikamaru at least.  They render so many ninjas powerless together, and alone they can create havoc for a ninja team.  Ino can essentially let you choose who is the Head Ninja of the team opposing you, allowing you to weaken a team, while Shikamaru shuts down most ninja abilities, which may make his the one to watch.  You can play the SR Shikamaru, but it's really a defense against Mental decks that are still out there.  If someone figures out how to really abuse Choji's damage-dealing effect, you'll see more Ino-Shika-Cho Earth decks out there.

-Neji Hyuga: Neji has always been found in awesome varieties and the latest are pretty nice.  The SR Neji, Detection by Byakugan, allows you to discard your opponent's Chakra at the cost of your own, slowing down their gameplan quickly.  Add Kisame, Yoroi and Chakra Absorption Jutsu and your opponent will have a very tough time using a Jutsu on you.  The common Neji, Another Perfect Defense, allows you to prevent damage by discarding cards from your hand, which is good if you run a card like Leaf Ninja Forces to keep a card in hand for discard.  You may see these cards if Taijutsu decks make a return.

-The new Sannin: People complain that the Sannin aren't so special anymore now that they are Uncommon, but those of us who don't have money to buy the awesome versions of Orochimaru can rejoice.  Us poor college students can now try out Curse Mark Jutsu with the new Orochimaru.  We also finally get a Tsunade without a drawback, but the uncommon Sannin give hate to two elements at once.  Depending on the Element your opponent is playing, all of his jutsus will cost 1 more Chakra.  Jiraiya's ability works against Fire and Wind, Tsunade's against Water and Earth and Orochimaru's against Wind and Lightning.  The Rare Jiraiya is awesome, allowing you to get a Jutsu from your discard pile during your Mission Phase if you have Naruto in play.  Jiraiya definitely makes Lightning decks of a different type playable, Toad decks and Mono-Lightning in general.

-The other Haku and Zabuza: We saw a Rare Haku and Super Rare Zabuza, but you'll possibly see the other versions of them as well.  Need a Haku and did't get him yet?  Play Bond Zabuza and you can search your deck for him.  the new Kekki Genkai Haku is immune to Mission cards, the bane of decks that rely on things like End of the Demon and Caged Bird.  Both of these are commons, so you'll be able to add awesome cards for cheap.

-Return of the Sand:The Sand Ninjas just got better, with several new cards around Gaara, and a pretty good Temari and Kankuro.  Puppet users get a Kankuro that can help them fetch a Puppet Master Jutsu so you can either fetch a Crow(the old one), make a 3/3( the new one) or give Crow a +1/+1 counter(R&R one).  Temari provides a way to target Jutsus and Missions from the hand.  Gaara returns with a couple rare ones and a common.  Baby Gaara, Gaara Alone, is a Turn 0 3/0 ninja who can only be played in a team with other Sand ninjas.  Gaara, Power of Shukaku is a great card to use if you aren't using Shukaku as he allows you to get a card with a Wind Symbol into your Chakra Pile to use for another Sand Jutsu.  Possessed Mode Gaara and Shukaku are the new big cards that will see play.  Possesed Mode can only be played by the effect of Sand Cocoon, while Shukaku can only be played via Possesed Mode but both are big and powerful.  The fact Gaara Alone and Possesed Mode can both be used in addition to a normal Gaara makes the Gaara fan's dream come true with enough Ninjas to utilize Sand Jutsus.  Last but not least, Yashamaru works like an Iruka, Scapegoat for Gaara, plus he is a Medical Ninja, so Medical decks can use him too.  The deck type we hoped for in Curse of Sand may make an impact.

-Shino and Kabuto, Deck Manipulation: The new Shino and new Kabuto have a similar effect that allows you to play with cards on top of your opponent's deck.  Shino's ability triggers when he is sent to battle while Kabuto's requires you to pay a Chakra to use the effect during your Mission Phase.  This allows you to look at what your opponent has and prepare countermeasures while at the meantime delaying the inevitable.  Rearranging draws over time can really frustrate your opponent.

-Other Mentions: The new Kiba will definitely see more play when better Akamarus come out.  We all know that the SR Lee and Might Guy will see play if Taijutsu decks come back the Third while he'll never be able to replace Addressing Past Wrongs is still a good card for those who just want a big Fire ninja.  Hinata has a lot of potential with the right Genin in your deck, the best use for her probably with the Wrapper Promo Sakura to repeatedly use her effect.  Tenten may see some play for decks that use a lot of Weapon type cards like Kunai and Cross-Shaped Shurikens, but not really on a competitive level.  The new Gamabunta and Gamakichi will be staples in a Toad deck, especially Gamabunta.  Fans of Itachi will be playing the new one against other Fire decks, while the new Kisame could very well see play over the old one.  Of all the Snow ninjas, Nadare Roga may have the most potential and may see play over Suien.  Of all the ninja I do see playing with, Dotou Kazahana is the one I don't see much play in unless someone makes Chakra Armor a staple, which the effect of isn't all that great.  Dotou needs Chakra Armor to be any good, and he has good stats if he wears Chakra Armor, but the only reason to really play him, his Jutsu from Dream Legacy, isn't really worth it.

The next topic will cover Jutsus and Missions.  What'll most likely see play and what won't will remain to be seen with examination.  Until next time, take care and if you need any help or deck advice, email me at
