SmittySensei here once
again to review our old bearded friend Asuma
Sarutobi, in his Reliable Comrade form.
My first impression
of this card is that he would be a great run in
mental power decks. Most all of the
effective mental decks are Earth/Wind, and Asuma
falls under the Earth category whereas his
"reliable comrade" Kurenai falls under the Wind
element. As you can see, this makes his effect a
bit easier to run due to their common arche
types. He's also great in a mental deck because
of his 6 attack power, which gives you greater
stability if your mental cards are taken down
and you're left running physical teams.
At first it looked
like (to me at least) his effect would be a
little too limited by requiring a specific other
Ninja, but after thinking about it a little more
I realized that I run two Kurenai in my
Water/Wind build and I always seem to get her
out on the field, proving that he may be
versatile enough to run effectively. Of
course this is all assuming that you have his
hand cost, which sadly hinders this card's
versatility because it's Earth, the least
supported element.
In limited Asuma is a
pretty good pick if you pull other earth cards,
but unfortunately that's unlikely to happen due
to the fact that Earth just doesn't have the
support to hold you over in that type of
tournament. Another thing dragging his limited
score down is the fact that his effect calls for
a Kurenai, which would be hard to pull of in
this instance of a limited tourny. Due to this
I'm going to have to take his limited score down
a good bit.
Overall he's a good
card to run in mental decks, but other than that
I suggest you run the other Asumas from the past
sets.
