Beastly Mage
Asuma Sarutobi
Today's card is a Super Rare version of Asuma-Sensei.
He's got great stats, plus the "12 Shinobi
Guardians" characteristic. He's got two great
effects (which are not valid, BTW). First effect
allows you to take three of your opponent's battle
rewards and turn them face-down during the Exchange
of Jutsu to make one of your opponent's battling
Ninjas go stand-by. That can be great in a pinch.
The other effect is great for hand and chakra
control decks, since he can protect those crucial
areas from your opponent's effects. To top it all
off, he's also got Mastery.
Ratings:
Limited: 2/5 (Super Rare that's a bit hard to get)
Constructed: 3/5

8/18/10 N-891 Asuma Sarutobi [The Will Of Fire]
====================================
Hmmm... You would thin a super rare Asuma with the
effect name of [The Will Of Fire] would have come
out in Set 17: Will of Fire, since those they share
the same name and WoF covered the arc of Asuma's
death... but it comes out in Fangs of the Snake
instead.
Actually, this card would have had no use in WoF
since his effect would have been pointless. Let's
first look at his characteristics. He's back as a
5-drop with a nice 6/3 healthy stats, but pathetic
3/0 injured, but that is likely due to him having
Mastery. He also has the standard Asuma
characteristics; Leaf, Jonin, Male, and the still
useless 12 Shinobi Guardians. Nothing special here
except Jonin and Mastery. Finally, he has Weapon CA
which is good more or less. Now to his effect.
During the EoJ, you can flip three of your
opponent's battle rewards face-down to make one
battling ninja a stand-bye ninja. A very good effect
for the new BR flipping deck, but it can be hard to
pull off consistently since you'll need a few ninjas
to constantly flip battle rewards. His second effect
is a nice bonus defense against Water and Earth's
chakra and hand control, respectively.
Ultimately, Asuma is not bad in his own deck type,
but even so, he's not too game changing unless you
have the field perfectly set up. I personally would
run the other Asuma's from set 17 over him since
that has squad/platoon tech going for it, but you
can run both if you want.
Limited: 1.75/5 Not too good here since his first
effect will be harder to pull off
