Beastly Mage
Hiashi Hyuga
Today's card reminds me of something I have to say
at the shop like every other week or at Chunin
tournaments: Tracking is mandatory. No exceptions.
This card goes well with the Hyuga Hand Control
Decks. He'll reduce your opponent's hand size by 1
AND he'll give you a Battle Reward at the start of
your opponent's turn if your opponent's hand is
empty (this is before drawing). It's a slow-but-sure
approach to a win, though it does take a bit of
effort to get this to work right. He truly belongs
in the Hyuga deck. I don't see him fitting into
other Earth decks (such as Battle Reward Flip). Hand
cost and high turn cost hurts him in Limited. But, 2
Mental and Mastery help balance him out.
Transitioning from our ANBU week we slam right into
Earth...well more like a dude's palm who is of the
Earth attribute. Hiashi Hyuga (Head of the Hyuga
Clan) makes you assume he would be to the
benefit of the Hyuga clan, but I would say this
benefit is indirect. I'll be the first to support
anything Taijutsu though, mainly because it's one of
the more realistic characteristics of the Naruto
series; unless some of you are magicians or fire
breathers out there. Let's turn on our Byakugan
pupils and give this card a detailed look through.
Guaranteed, nobody is arguing that Earth didn't need
a Jonin that could have some potential to counter
the hysterical presence of Water and Fire! I'm
looking at this card from a birds eye view approach;
allow the Earth element to hold a key to slow the
more faster paced elements currently making up our
meta. The fact that he's a Hyuga and of the Taijutsu
characteristic are played down completely, besides
the mastery characteristic, but don't let this fool
you and want to binder this guy because a smart
effect is this guys purpose. Hiashi's effect serves
as a consequence for any opponent who is rushing
through their hands or using an empty hand strategy,
giving you a battle reward and bringing that much
closer to victory. Atop one detrimental effect is
another, "reduce your opponents hand size by 1",
making Hiashi's first goal easier to pull off. I
highly recommend this card for all mono-Earth decks
or Hyuga specific decks; worth noticing also is this
card doesn't really have a drawback. Run Hiashi and
you will definitely be making your opponent "watch
closely."
Constructed: 3.5/5 (While not having a distinct game
breaking effect, he's a great strategical tool)
Limited: 4.5/5 (Has great potential to shake a
loosely built deck)
Block: 4.5/5 (Palm to the face of water decks)
Art: C- (I always get the feeling that he's just
staring at his nails with extreme intensity!!!)
P.S. Tomorrow's card might need a mani and pedi!
