Beastly Mage
Neji Hyuga
Today's card is a pretty darn awesome version of
Neji. He's a turn 4 Jonin with 1 Hand Cost (a bit
odd for that turn) who has two effects that give
Byakugan Hand Control a good boost. During the
Exchange of Jutsu, you can give one damage to an
opposing Ninja. The only way your opponent can
cancel this if a card is discarded. This effect is
not Valid, but his second one is: your opponent's
hand size is reduced by 1. If you've seen the other
Hyugas in this set then you know that they all have
the hand reduction effect. Making your opponent
discard a card to conserve a Ninja when the hand
itself is getting limited can be painful unless
there's some way to counter this. In the right deck,
you'll probably get to clean out your opponent's
hand with the Hyugas.
In Limited he could be good (though Hand Cost
kinda tones him down). In Constructed he can be a
pain for your opponent in a Hyuga Hand Control Deck.
Try it and see!
In many ways, this is the Neji that everyone has
been waiting for. Decent turn, decent stats for the
turn, a handy effect, and
passive-but-not-overbearing effect, and with Growth
to boot. This guy will definitely see play in Hand
Control Earth.
Limited: 3.5/5 Granted you get plenty of Earth in
your pulls/picks.
Unlimited: 2.5/5 I like [Seeing Through the Wall]
still. Call it personal bias, if you will.
Block: 4/5 Definitely a tank, especially growthing
into him on Turn 4 and following up with any Turn 4
Ninja.
