Beastly Mage
Shikamaru Nara (Suit)
Hey there, Naruto Fans! After a well-deserved break
from reality, I'm back in action. The new year
brings us a new set of exclusives. So, let's get
cracking! Today's card is a "suit" version of
Shikamaru. The characteristics are all the same
you'd expect from a Chunin-level Shikamaru. Thing is
that he's a turn 0, making him get out even sooner.
He's a 0/2 - 0/0, which is normal for Shika at that
turn. I'm not completely sure what the "suits" do,
but I'm guessing it has similarities with the Leaf
Academy cards, since Shika's effect relates to
Growth Coins. When one of your Ninjas is removed
from play, you can put X Growth Coins on one of your
in-play Ninjas. In this case, X is equal to how many
Growth Coins the removed Ninja had. If you read the
effect text, you'll notice that it doesn't say "one
of your other Ninjas", so he can get the coins as
well. I'm not completely sure how that kind of deck
will fare off against other decks (such as Void),
but this could be fun. He's an early-turn Ninja, so
he can be useful in Limited. In Constructed and
Block he could be good too. Try it and see!

Shikamaru Nara (Suit) n1043:
I find it quite odd that we get a Turn 0 Chunin, but
even so he isn't the best ninja to set in your
village on your first turn, especially if you went
second. Despite his odd characteristics for a Turn
0, the point of his effect is easily noticeable, and
that is that your in-play Growth Coins won't go away
if he has anything to say about it. For that, he is
solid in a deck based around "Leaf Academy."

Shikamaru (suit)
So we get the treat to seeing some of the upcoming
cards from the Gallant Sage pack? Nice.
We get some more support for our Leaf Academy decks
but is it really worth the trouble? If you're
updated, like I am, on the day-to-day spoiler on
Bandai then you would most likely know about the new
Suit archetype. It's kinda unjust to say it's
"new" but they do seem on their own in comparison to
the present Lead Academy deck. The standard
"place one growth coin....blah blah" is being
replaced with some more clever effects. For
instance: Shikamaru Nara (suit)
"when one of your ninjas is removed from play, put
up to X growth coins on 1 of your ninjas.
x=the number of growth coins on the removed ninja"
It's a fairly defensive growth coin net for the
deck.
The stats are pathetic and the user will have to
take advantage of the effect above all else.
There were two other Suit ninja cards but for the
sake of saving some people from spoiler alerts I
will hold my breath.
Still, I'm not impressed. Even with the
mission card Leaf Academy this card doesn't cut the
cheese for me.
At the very least..he's looking good.

-bad stats and situational effect? i'll skip
Today's card is part of the new Leaf Academy theme
coming out in set 20. Shikamaru is third card we've
seen so far. The other two Suit ninjas are Gaara and
Sasuke, which were previewed at
http://theperfectcurve.blogspot.com.
Shikamaru's effect has synergy with Sasuke's; when
Sasuke kills off your Leaf Academy ninja, you can
transfer that ninja's growth tokens onto another of
your ninjas. This is very useful in Leaf Academy
decks when your opponent tries to take out your
heavily growth'd ninjas. A very nice support card
for Leaf Academy decks.
Limited: 2.5/5 T0 with decent support and good
