Beastly Mage
Rock Lee [Muscle Memory]
Today's card is one that's sure to please Rock Lee
fans. This T2 Chunin version of Lee has a pretty
cool (and Valid) effect. Whenever any effect would
change his Combat/Support values you can negate that
effect and give him +4/+0 for the remainder of the
turn. So, if your opponent were to use something
that would decrease his Combat by 2, you can negate
that and increase his Combat by 4. It only works
once (which is the rule for optional effects such as
this). If your opponent wants to weaken this guy
then you'll make your opponent waste one effect to
do this. Also, this works with your effects as well.
Let's say you want to pump him up by 2. Use that
effect, negate it, pump him up by 4. It's a good
effect, and with Growth you can have some fun with
this guy.

N-1299 Rock Lee [Muscle Memory]
============================
Today we kick off exclusive week an interesting new
Rock Lee. Whenever his power is changed by an
effect, that effect is negated and he gets a massive
+4/+0 boost instead. Unfortunately, this works
against you as well, but most self-pumps don't give
you a bonus as high as +4 combat. While the effect
is cool, it is almost useless since nothing really
alters your power in the game, except -1/-1 coins.
To my understanding, a -1/-1 coin is not an effect
and cannot be negated so Lee cannot become a nifty
sideboard card. If it was worded so that if anything
changed his power, rather than an effect, it would
work, but then he would be broken if you managed to
get a growth token on him.
Currently, I don't think this card will see much
play, unless we get a card that will easily exploit
his effect and give him an easy +4/+0. In unlimited,
cards with the [Reliance] effect can easily kick off
Lee's effect, but at the same time it will negate
the boost it gives the other ninjas as well as the
other effects [Reliace] ninjas have... But if you
get Naruto and Sakura out, you have a Lee with 12
combat which is somewhat cool... /rambling
One small thing that Bandai could have given this
card to make it more playable is Surge. Surging for
a +4 can lead to an easy OV, and it wouldn't have
broken the card. Not sure why Bandai didn't give it
Lee since his effect is begging to be exploited by
it, but I guess the play testers (>implying they
exist) might have felt it was too powerful for
whatever reason.
Limited: 2/5
Unlimited: 2.5/5 Possible shenanigans I guess.
Block: 1.5/5 Unless I'm missing a tech combo, this
card is useless unless a future preview will make it
good.

Another set, another Lee. We start off our preview
week with one of lightning's most famous ninja, and
this one has a very interesting effect. By the way
it's worded, I'm not 100% sure how this card is
supposed to work. You can use it of course with
something like Karin [Transference] to get a +4/0
instead of a +2/+2. However, the fact that it says
"when an effect" throws me off. By that wording, it
means any effect that would change his power.
Theoretically, if you have a growth coin on him, he
would be a 8/2 at all times (since this doesn't seem
to be an activated effect) and the same is true of
-1-1 coins. If that is the case, that actually
makes him really good. However, if it turns out that
only single time targeting effects work on him, he
won't see play. Other than that, he's competing for
lightning's coveted 2 slot drop, a spot already
taken with zeal by Iruka and Konohamaru Ninja Squad;
even so, the vanilla Lee is hard to pass up in a
deck. I'll keep this card in the back of my mind
though, in the event some shenanigans can be pulled
with him.
