I like the new style of ninjas we’ve been seeing since Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty – which is to say, the batches where a lot of them don’t even have the ninjutsu ability. It would get boring if all ninjas played the same, and Magic players tend to move in circles when trying to build around ninjutsu. You might question just how ninja-like some of their abilities feel; Nashi is all about graveyard synergies and getting extra cards, which is probably kind of a stretch. To be fair, being a ninja probably involves constantly learning new skills and tricks, and those kinds of abilities are always very popular. Working with enchantments feels a little random in blue and black, though every color does use the card type, and it makes for a cool little flavor nod to how he’s looking for information about his mother (ie. The Tale of Tamiyo). I’m not sure we have the resources for a Dimir Enchantress deck, but a card like Nashi may help out other Enchantress decks that want to use cards like Dark Tutelage or Time of Ice.

Nashi’s escapades in Duskmourn form the crux of the story, and he has quite the interesting card to pair with his appearance. In particular, he plays well with the themes of the set, letting you potentially draw cards or make future swings more effective. An evasive 2/2 isn’t much to start, but he can start snowballing, getting both combat damage triggers and potentially drawing loads of cards. He’s not flashy, but he’s great at generating value, and that value can add up nicely in a long game.

Constructed: 3.5 (great early, but has issues if you have to topdeck him)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 4.25 (enchantments are abundant, and that helps a lot)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.75
