Historical
boardgames vs. role-playing games and
electronic shoot'em-ups
Summer is the main season for conventions
(large, organized gatherings from hundreds
to as many as twenty thousand fans) in what
could be called the "geek subgenres" of
popular science fiction (including Star Trek
and Star Wars); fantasy (which was pioneered
by J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings);
role-playing games (such as Dungeons &
Dragons); comic-books; and multifarious
types of gaming, including historical
boardgames (also called wargames, strategy
games, or conflict simulations). Historical
boardgames could be seen as a more
reality-based alternative in relation to
most forms of gaming and fan identifications
today.

NCAA Football
2004 - PS2, Xbox, GameCube
What isn't there to like about NCAA 2004. It
was an awesome football sim, they've
expanded the list of schools, songs, and
mascots, taken it online (PS2 only...grrr)
and added a slew of new features, and
unlockables. This is more than a 'minor
update' this is a must have football game.
Let me be upfront and honest with y'all...
I'm not the biggest college football fan.
GASP! I know, my buddies all swear it's
better than the NFL, the rivalries, the
pageantry, the yadda yadda yadaa. I just
like pro football better. Maybe it's the
lack of a superbowl, or perhaps the fact
that players play for four years, tops.
Anyway, with that out in the open, I can
honestly say I am shocked at how much I
liked NCAA 2004. Heck, it may even turn me
into a Saturday football fan... maybe.

Bloodrayne
Gets Her Bits Out For The Lads, Playboy Deal
Revealed!
Turning Bloodrayne into a movie is one
thing, trying to turn the character into a
bona-fide sex symbol is another entirely.
However, strange as it sounds, Bloodrayne is
about to bare all as the cover model for the
October issue of Playboy. As the website
says, “Rayne is 100% topless and smokin’ hot
in the October issue of Playboy magazine.
This is a first in videogame history and
trust us when we say that Rayne does not
disappoint.”

Brothers in
Arms Hands-On
War is hell, but damn if it's not pretty.
First impressions of the PC version, plus
new movies.
August 25, 2004 - While the PC and PS2 have
seen their fair share of World War II games,
and the Xbox is about to, none of them have
quite offered the same experience as
Brothers in Arms is promising. Think Rainbow
Six squad tactics meets Call of Duty meets
Full Spectrum Warrior, only in entirely in
real-time. Although we've seen and played
the Xbox version quite a bit since we first
learned about the game earlier this year, we
got a chance to see the PC version of the
game for the first time at the recent German
Games Convention in Leipzig, so we thought
it only fair that we share our impressions
with you.

Video gaming
finds itself at crossroads
Sony continues to aim for technological
advancement, while Nintendo prefers to build
on game play
There are two schools of thought about the
future direction of video game hardware.
One, represented by Sony Computer
Entertainment, maker of the industry-leading
PlayStation 2, sees ever-advancing
technology as the key to keeping the game
market hot. The other school, represented by
gaming pioneer Nintendo, believes today's
hardware is powerful enough and the industry
should focus on innovative forms of game
play.
