Metal Gear Solid 3 -- Everything We Know
Given the extreme change in setting over the
previous games, you can expect a very
different gameplay experience from Metal
Gear Solid 3. This will be accomplished
through a variety of new systems and ideas.
How does one hide in a jungle while
remaining relatively mobile? The answer is
camouflage, which is, for the combat
dictionary-challenged, "a garment dyed in
splotches of green, brown, tan, and black so
as to make the wearer indistinguishable from
the surrounding environment." At first
glance, camouflaged clothing might not sound
too effective. But the human eye works best
at detecting motion, not patterns. Thus, an
uneven assortment of appropriately colored
splotches can be quite effective in hiding a
prone or slowly moving figure, and to a
surprising degree.
In MGS3, Snake will have to make full use of
camouflage to sneak unseen through the
jungle and other environments.

PS2 has had its chips
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has just
won a landmark High Court case and secured a
ruling that the modification or chipping of
PS2s is illegal.
SCEE had taken Mr David Ball to the High
Court over the selling of 1500 Messiah 2 mod
chips, which circumvented Sony's copy
protection measures and allowed the playing
of pirated, unauthorised and unlicensed
games on UK PS2s.
The judge, Mr Justice Laddie, also ruled
that using mod chips to bypass the PS2's
technical protection is also unlawful, thus
criminalizing anyone who knowingly uses PS2
mod chips.

High-Class Football
Madden's one of those games that just keeps
raising the bar…on itself. This 2004 edition
maintains the traditional love affair with
the NFL that football gamers have come to
expect from the series while adding some
dynamite new features.
Hardcore Franchise players, for instance,
are going to party hearty with the new Owner
mode. At last, you can take a shot running
every aspect of your football operation.
Winning the Super Bowl is one thing, but how
about turning a profit? You can set ticket
prices, adjust parking fees, and spend cash
on advertising to put butts in the seats.

X-Men Legends - Developer Diary #2 (PS2)
Rob Gee, project lead at Raven Software,
discusses the initial concept for X-Men
Legends and significant superhero game
influences.
Designing games with superheroes isn't an
easy task. Gamers are demanding and want
their heroes to replicate their beloved
fantasies as closely as possible. It takes
research, focus groups, and testing,
testing, testing. However, as the X-Men
Legends team makes headway into finalizing
the code for its upcoming action-RPG, it
looks like the daunting task is about to
become a reality.

Katamari Damacy coming to the US
Namco Hometek has confirmed that Katamari
Damacy, the little Japanese oddity we got so
excited about last month, is now set for
release in the USA this September on PS2.
Although there's still no word on a European
release, we're hoping that a Western
translation will inspire more PS2 owners to
try and play it.

Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (PS2)
The Hawkman, his faithful companions, and
you head back to the underground. With
better storytelling, loads of new features,
and ample refinement, THUG2 should trump the
original in every way.
Lots of new features; mindful level design
that makes the non-skating features more
fun; more Tony Hawk brilliance. Too soon to
tell if the new features hold up over the
long haul; only one level shown at this
juncture.
Every year Neversoft releases another Tony
Hawk game and every year it's a lovely
improvement over the last one ... save for
last year when the company redefined
everything gamers could expect from an
action-sports title.

BAM! Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq: BFUN)
today announced that Bujingai: The Forsaken

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
EA busts out a Japanese-style
role-playing game that's developed in the
west and firmly rooted in Middle-earth.
Cool crossover with the movies' events; fine
use of materials from New Line and WETA;
popular gameplay style. Some may find the
gameplay too derivative; the battles shown
lack the flare of the ones found in many
modern RPGs.
I know what some of you are thinking. You're
all, "Here it is. EA is slapping The Lord of
the Rings on a Japanese-style role-playing
game (RPG). There's no way an American
developer can do this right." And while The
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age does indeed
appear to be Final Fantasy X-3: Gimli's
Adventures, it's shaping up to be a really
strong RPG that makes excellent use of the
source material. Furthermore, the team
behind it contains several ex-Square
talents. There's a very good chance that The
Third Age will be one of the best
Japanese-style RPGs made by westerners.
