Number 1: Infection Buzzking – #MZMI-EN023

2+ Level 8 monsters
Once per turn, during your Standby Phase: You can attach 1 card from your opponent’s GY to this card as material. You can only use each of the following effects of “Number 1: Infection Buzzking” once per turn. If this card is Xyz Summoned: You can look at your opponent’s Extra Deck and send 1 card from it to the GY. You can detach 1 material from this card, then target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy it, then if you destroyed a face-up monster, inflict damage to your opponent equal to half the ATK it had on the field.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Number 1: Infection Buzzking wraps up another week of looking at Maze of Millennia and we’re finishing up with another Xyz Monster.

Rank 8 requiring multiple Level 8 monsters usually means those materials will be involved in some way. Attaching a card from the opponent’s grave onto Buzzking does take away resources in the grave for later use, but it has to happen during your Standby Phase so there is a bit of waiting involved.

When Xyz Summoned, Buzzking can be a cost-free Extra-Foolish Burial, but for the opponent. Handy to get rid of a monster that has to be summoned in a specific way. You won’t be giving them some kind of archetype-specific monster that could help them like how Tearlament or Shaddoll monsters help when sent to the grave. Monster Reborn isn’t played as much as it used to be, so there is less threat of the monster coming back easily. Trade a material to pop an opponent’s card is standard spot removal, with the added benefit of burn damage if you choose a face-up monster. Half the ATK is still decent burn and the burn damage is just an added bonus as the more important thing is getting rid of a card. If you can freely Xyz Summon Rank 8’s like Galaxy-Eyes/Photon can, this card could always be used to finish an opponent off like Gagaga Cowboy used to be, except packing more potential damage.

At 3000ATK, Buzzking is a boss monster for any archetype able to make Rank 8’s. Spot removal with a bit of burn potentially, and the added bonus of being able to recharge its materials while at the same time taking away opponent’s cards in their grave, what’s not to like? I suppose giving him a Quick Effect would’ve been overkill with everything already included, but it would’ve made one of his effects more powerful. A pretty good Rank 8 considering he has no protection or negation power.

While it hasn’t seen as much success as Bonfire and Transaction Rollback, our week-ending card was nonetheless just as controversial on reveal; Number 1: Infection Buzzking is the fake Number 1 from Yugioh Zexal, making its TCG debut as a Rank 8 DARK Fiend Xyz monster. It needs any two or more level 8 monsters, so it’s a prime candidate for Horus decks, though other Rank 8 decks like Galaxy, Blue-Eyes, and Dark World can make use of it. It probably isn’t a coincidence that Buzzking also has Blue-Eyes stats, with 3000 attack and 2500 defense– creatively bankrupt, but more than acceptable!

Buzzking’s first effect is a soft once per turn, triggering during your Standby Phase to let you attach one card from your opponent’s Graveyard to Buzzking as an Xyz material. It’s not very useful as disruption, but it can throw a monkey wrench into certain decks by removing monsters that recycle themselves; Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames is a prime candidate, as is Garunix Eternity, Hyang of the Fire Kings. Buzzking’s other two effects are both hard once per turn instead, and this first one is the one that had people grabbing pitchforks; if it’s Xyz Summoned you can look through your opponent’s Extra Deck and send one monster among them to the Graveyard. People who had the misfortune of being “pseudo-FTK’d” by Kashtira Unicorn know that sniping a playmaker can essentially end the game, and Extra Deck knowledge is very potent as well. It’s a strong effect for sure, though personally I don’t think it’s as problematic as people say it is, especially when other Rank 8 options can have higher impact unless you know for sure you’re dueling against a deck with 1 copy of an important monster (like sniping Striker Dragon from Dragon Link). Buzzking’s last effect is in the middle of the other two, letting you detach an Xyz material to target and destroy an opponent’s card, then burn your opponent for half of its current attack if it was a face-up monster. It’s good removal first and foremost, though a few meme FTKs have weaponized the burn for extra damage. Buzzking is a very solid Rank 8 monster overall and has seen play in some Horus decks, though it probably won’t be banned any time soon, much to the chagrin of Unicorn haters.

+Variety of effects that can cheese certain decks
+Fun FTK potential with burn
-Not very useful against decks that don’t mind the Extra Deck rip
-Competes with more versatile Rank 8 monsters

From one Rank 8 to another, we finally have all the Number monsters to make an anime appearance (besides Dark Illumiknight, which is basically Illumiknight) with the printing of the fake Number 1: Infection Buzzking.

Buzzking is a Rank 8 DARK Fiend with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Again a great statline, DARK is amazing, and Fiend is a strong typing. Materials are any 2+ Level 8 monsters, thankfully a change from the 3 Level 8s the anime version needed. Once a turn, during your Standby Phase, you can attach a card from their grave to this as material, making sure you don’t ever run out of Xyz Materials for this. The remaining effects are each a hard once per turn, the first triggering when Xyz Summoned to look at the opponent’s Extra Deck and send a card from it to the grave, hopefully getting rid of their best card they aren’t running multiples of. I can see the HOPT on this to ensure you can’t try and loop this to clean the opponent’s Extra Deck. The other effect lets you detach a material from this card to target a card the opponent controls and destroy it, then if it was a monster, the opponent would take damage equal to half that monster’s ATK. Easy spot removal on a Rank 8, something the pool was lacking generically to the level of this. The burn is also nice if you run into time rules, or the fact you can remove Spells and Traps is already pretty solid as well. Number 1 is a good Rank 8. It might not offer much on the opponent’s turn, but it can wipe their Extra Deck of a card and it is spot removal each turn as long as you can keep taking materials from the opponent’s grave.
