Number 62: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon – #LDS2-EN053

2 Level 8 monsters – If this card battles, during damage calculation (Quick Effect): You can detach 1 material from this card once per battle; this card gains ATK equal to the combined Ranks of all Xyz Monsters currently on the field x 200, during that damage calculation only. If this card in its owner’s control is destroyed by an opponent’s card effect while it has “Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon” as material: You can Special Summon this card during your 2nd Standby Phase after activation and double its ATK. Any battle damage this card inflicts to your opponent is halved unless it has “Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon” as material.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Number 62: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon is our Throwback Thursday choice from back in 2014.

Generic Rank 8 with incredible ATK even for a Rank 8: 4000ATK for a generic Rank 8 makes it a desirable target for anyone making Rank 8’s even if GEPPD would only serve as a beatstick. As if the ATK wasn’t enough, this dragon can get even bigger for a detached material during the damage calculation. 200 times the number of Ranks of all Xyz monsters on the field will get you another 1600ATK minimum for your trouble. That will balance out the negative effect that comes at the end of the card: battle damage getting halved unless you have Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon attached as material. Don’t get me wrong, that is a negative, but it is still a 4000ATK that is going to get over pretty much anything and while LP aren’t a main concern through most of the game, it is very difficult to deal with this monster. 5600 would get cut to 2800 during a direct attack, but that’s still a nice chunk done to the opponent. Now is where the Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon clause comes into play. Like all others before, GEPPD has an effect pertaining to the precursor to all the Xyz.

If you have Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon attached while it gets destroyed by a card effect (because that’s the only way you’re getting rid of it unless you’ve got something like an Honest or Cat’s Ear Tribe-like monster, GEPPD will be back during the 2nd Standby Phase with double the ATK. Lets take a breath and think of how ridiculous that would be: 8000ATK! I know there can be crazy ATK boosts of monsters in this game, I’ve had a Barrel Dragon with 3 Limiter Removals come after my LP direct back in the day…he got Kuriboh and my opponent never recovered. Anyways, having a monster that strong that came back because you used a certain Level 8 actually makes you want to play that monster.

For a generic Rank 8 I like this. No protection, no negation, it’s a beatstick and while there’s a downside to even that, it is still a strong monster to have there on the field. Now, if you do have Galaxy-Eyes Photon Draogn attached, then things can get interesting.

Considering what we’re going to look at tomorrow, it’s fitting for Throwback Thursday this week to go to Number 62: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon.

Number 62 is a Rank 8 LIGHT Dragon Xyz with 4000 ATK and 3000 DEF. The stats are fairly high, even for a Rank 8, and we remain with LIGHT and Dragon here. The materials are any 2 Level 8 monsters, so completely generic for Rank 8 Decks. I will mention the last part where the battle damage this does is halved if it doesn’t have Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon as material, so not every Deck is getting that 4000 ATK Rank 8 without any sort of downside, but it kinda keeps this best in Galaxy/Photon since you can just use Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon as material to summon it, or get it attached via the effect of Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon. Anyways, if this card battles, then during damage calculation you get a Quick Effect to detach a material from this card to have it gain 200 ATK times the combined Ranks of all Xyz Monsters on the field. So it can very easily get to pretty high numbers, with just this card alone having this effect boost itself to 5600 ATK. It isn’t like you’d need more ATK power on this to run over most monsters, so it’s just for higher damage output mainly for OTKs. Second effect triggers if it’s in its owner’s control, has Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon as material, and is destroyed by an opponent’s card effect, letting you revive this during your 2nd Standby Phase after activation with double its ATK. I mean, bigger numbers are nice, but this is fairly specific and slow to pull off. If the opponent does destroy this, I doubt the Duel might even last long enough for it to return. If anything, this is mainly just good for its first effect to get some high damage output, mainly while it has Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon as material so you can maximize your damage. Playing it in Galaxy/Photon isn’t terrible, just anywhere else you see it will likely to be just a name to slap other Galaxy-Eyes Xyzs on top of.

Advanced Rating: 3/5

Art: 4/5 It doesn’t look overly different from the original Galaxy-Eyes based on this artwork, but I still like it.
