Hello Pojo Fans,

One for One is our Throwback Thursday choice this week and a choice that finds itself back in the meta every few sets.

True to its name, One for One is just that: a 1-for-1. Send a monster to the grave from the hand for a Special Summon of a Level 1 from your hand or Deck. Nine times out of ten you’ll be summoning from the Deck, though not every time. Easy to gain advantage off the discard, One for One fishes out countless Level 1 monsters from the Deck, which will likely activate off being Special Summoned. At the worst, you get a specific monster you need for your turn. In the case of the archetype we’re covering, Purrely is the Level 1 that makes the archetype go and while it isn’t required for any of the Xyz Summons, having it attached makes effects become Quick-Effects. That translates into disruption, which translates into advantage for you. SPYRAL played it, Infernoids played it, Dragon Link played it, Tri-Brigades spliced with some Lyrilusc have played it, and now it lends its power to Purrely.

One for One is a card that we’ve seen before and will see again: a card that will always have playability in the meta.

Throwback Thursday gives us another way for Purrely to summon their main monsters from the Deck while also just being one of the best Level 1 support cards there is: One for One.

One for One is a Normal Spell that lets you send a monster from your hand to the graveyard to summon any Level 1 monster from your hand or Deck. It is more of a two-for-one actually since you use this as well, but I get what they were going for with the name. Anyways, this is a pretty powerful card to summon almost any monster from the Deck, justt as long as you meet the Level restriction. The plays this has allowed over the years is why it’s been Limited for well over a decade now, with the OCG trying it at 2 for a short period before putting it back to 1. The first Deck I can think of that used and abused this was Frog FTK for being able to summon Substitoad from the Deck. Synchro combo could also use this card to get to a Tuner they’d need over the years from Glow-Up Bulb to Spore to Jet Synchron. The wide range of things you can do with One for One is pretty crazy, so expect it to remain Limited at least for a long time. Still an outstanding card to this day for Decks using Level 1 monsters.

Art: 3.5/5 I know the top monster is Samsara Lotus, but I don’t think the bottom monster is even a real card yet.

Speak of the devil– Throwback Thursday brings us One for One, a Normal Spell that’s currently limited on the TCG banlist. We briefly mentioned this card when reviewing Purrely, since it is a level 1 monster after all. One for One has a single effect, sending a monster from your hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon a level 1 monster from your hand or deck. It’s not hard to see why this card is limited; there’s a small but powerful group of level 1 monsters that can kickstart some nasty combos, including the recently unlimited Jet Synchron, the recently limited Substitoad, and the still-banned Glow-Up Bulb. Linkuriboh also made it exceedingly easy to summon Crystron Halqifibrax, who is also banned. Otherwise, One for One is overall an excellent card for any deck with a level 1 play starter, like Lyrilusc, Monarch, or Blue-Eyes Synchro builds. Incidentally, I don’t think One for One is very good in Purrely, as one of its potential upsides is a downside in Purrely decks. Yugioh players are all-too-wary of the proverb of “discarding being a plus”, and for good reason, as in the past, part of One for One’s strength was being able to dump monsters with Graveyard effects and generate advantage. Outside of hand traps, Purely decks actually don’t run that many monsters, so One for One is a little risky to play unless you’re playing an unconventional build. Could One for One come back to 3? Maybe, but I would definitely be wary of it with Jet Synchron now fully legal. Overall, a great extender and play starter for monster-heavy decks with powerful level 1 monsters, but probably not as broken as it looks.
