Onomatopickup – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Midweek brings us to a card that helps search cards to really accelerate Rank 4 Spam, Onomatopickup.

Onomatopickup is a Continuous Spell that upon activation lets you search for any Onomat card from your Deck that isn’t Onomatopickup. This leaves you with three options. Utopic Onomatopoeia to serve as a Gagaga, Gogogo, Dododo, and Zubaba monster while also letting you summon more monsters of those archetypes all at once for one or multiple Rank 4s, the second is Onomatopia to gain counters each time you summon Utopias and has a non-once per turn effect to remove 2 counters to summon a monster of the 4 archetypes from the Deck for more Rank 4 spam, and the last is Onomatopaira to search for 2 Gagaga, Gogogo, Zubaba, or Dododo monsters, but you can’t search for 2 monsters of the same category, meaning if you try to search Utopic Onomatopoeia, that’s all you get. So basically, Onomatopickup searches for cards that helps get more Rank 4 Spam going, and if your monsters aren’t all Level 4, then this card can target a Gagaga, Gogogo, Zubaba, or Dododo monster to make every monster you control with a Level become the Level of the targeted monster, so more Rank 4 Spam. If you control Gagaga Magician though, you can use its effect to change its Level from 1 to 8 and then you got immediate Rank 1 to 8 Spam, but you’re probably focusing on 4s. Onomatopickup is a simple card that helps accelerate your Rank 4 Spam easier by searching cards that do such, and then modifying Levels to make sure everything is Level 4. Another 3 of for Onomatopoeia Decks.

Advanced Rating: 4.5/5

Art: 4/5 Zubaba Knight had to be Level 3, so Gagaga Magician is picking up the slack.

Onomatopickup is aptly named given the names of our cards this week.  While not as repetitive, can still be a mouthful to say.  This is a Continuous Magic card that encompasses everything we’ve looked at this week thus far:  Dododo, Gagaga, Zubaba, and Gogogo, of course.  So, upon activation, you can add an Onomat card from your Deck to your Hand, save this card, of course.

Next, you’re allowed to select and Target any Monster, so long as it’s name involves any of the 4 above, and make all Monsters you control become the Level of the chosen Monster until the End Phase.  Obviously, this is screaming for XYZ abuse (or maybe even Link and/or Synchro in this day and age, but in Yuma’s, it would be XYZ).  The Level manipulation from this card stays in effect even if this card leaves the Field.

Said effect can only be used once per turn, and you can only activate one of these per turn.  Which makes sense.  If you could do more than once in a turn, you’re likely spamming the Field too fast with various Rank XYZ (likely 3 and 4) and again, since removing this card from the Field doesn’t negate the Level manipulation, I think that’s necessary.  Nice combo setup card here, without a doubt.

   Onomatopickup opens up the Onomatopoeia series of cards to some versatile plays. Searching for an Onomat card when played would justify a space in an Onomatopoeia series deck, so everything after that is great. Most of the time, I’ll be going for Onomatopaira to prep for what’s coming up.

   The second effect, which allows you make all Monsters you control the same level as an Onomatopoeia series Monster you control, is where the best plays can come from. That gives this card some function in other decks that can tech it.

   The HOPT on both effects is a good balance. This card might be a tad overpowered and has a lot of potential to set up OTKs. It also doesn’t limit you to XYZ summons as other members of this series have built in for lesser effects.

   The art represents what the card is, but it’s pretty bland in my opinion. Nothing notably amazing or awful about it.

Versatility – 5
– This card can do a lot of things in a lot of decks.

Rogue Plays – 5
– You can start a lot of combos off with this card’s search while also finishing the same combo with the harmonizing level effect.

Art – 3
– There’s not much to say about it.

Balance – 4
– It could have used a bit of a rebalance.

Uniqueness – 5
– It’s definitely one of a kind.

I’ll give this card a 4/5, and I look forward to playing with it more.
