This card’s effect would be insane if it didn’t cost five mana. Consider that Reap was a viable rogue deck in Type 1 for years in the 90s – while eternal formats have changed and that’s no longer the case, recurring a whole lot of things and playing them again will always be good. While it’s possible to get a seemingly disappointing regrowth by rolling snake-eyes, the next worst result is already getting eyebrow-raisingly strong. Look, for example, at how many card-drawing spells cost two mana. While those ones may not be as powerful as the banned ones, we’re also used to casting them once and moving on. Five mana and randomness will hold it back in constructed, unless a deck emerges where everything else costs one mana; still, I think this is a great option to get some old-school Golgari-style action kicking in other settings.

I hear people are trying to build Reap-Lace in Premodern, which makes me glad I play The Rock and can Wish for Withered Wretch!

Five mana for a recursion spell might be a bit of an ask, but Pair o’ Dice Lost might be one of the more purely efficient versions…if you’re lucky. That said, you’re going to get back more than this card’s mana cost a lot of the time, a bit over two-thirds, and so you’re likely going to spend five mana to get back more than five. Of course, if you have a bunch of zero-mana things like Lotus Petals and what not, any result will be a favorable one, and so this shines in those eggs-style decks where quantity may matter more than quality. It’s not great if you’re strapped for resources, but it doesn’t take much luck for this to pay dividends.
