Hello Pojo Fans,

Phantom of Yubel has had the hype behind it since it got announced as an even better monster to help Yubel archetypes (though I think Fiendsmith will likely take that title).

Less flexible with Super Poly than the first Yubel Fusion we received, Phantom of Yubel needs itself and a Fiend with 0 ATK/DEF. Plenty of targets within the archetype that are used to support Yubel as well as copies of the archetype monster itself. Shuffling back is an alright effect, skipping the Fusion Spell phase takes away the need for another card, and including the graveyard for the Fusion Summon extends its playability. Can’t be used for another Fusion because you could go into another Yubel Fusion easily using it. Carrying the standard Yubel effect involving battle is predictable and expected.

The great effect comes in turning a monster effect into a forced Yubel destruction for you from the field, hand or Deck. Phantom of Yubel tributes itself to pop Spirit of Yubel in the Deck to summon out regular Yubel. This sets you up for another Phantom of Yubel summon next turn, or this turn if you changed the opponent’s effect. Not being restricted on summoning this card once per turn opens it up to stay on the field even if you have to go through multiple copies. This was also why it can’t be used as a Fusion Material: you would cycle this back with a Yubel for another copy of itself and repeat the process creating an infinite loop. Not for nothing, that would make Yubel decks pretty darn good.

As is, this is a combo piece that helps Spirit of Yubel and Nightmare Throne become an engine that is playable and not need much around it. Nightmare Throne destroys Spirit in the Deck, which summons a regular Yubel, which you then cycle them back to make Phantom of Yubel. It helps get rid of Yubel monsters you can’t summon easily (Yubel is still a Brick of sorts), and it can be consistent. Turning once per turn effects into something that helps you and then prevents your opponent from activating them again this turn is a win/win scenario.

With a bunch of legacy support for Yubel in both Phantom Nightmare and Legacy of Destructiton, it was fitting when the OCG gave the archetype a promo alongside Shining Sarcophagus, and thankfully both were imported quickly, especially this card: Phantom of Yubel.

Phantom of Yubel is a Level 9 DARK Fiend Fusion with 0 ATK and DEF. Stats are standard for Yubel monsters, and a DARK/Fiend is still great. Fusion materials are any Yubel monster and any Fiend with 0 ATK/DEF, which is basically the Yubel Deck in general, making the requirements easy to get to. You don’t regularly Fusion Summon this with Polymerization, or more specifically Super Polymerizatiton in Yubel, instead you summon it by shuffling the materials from your hand, field, and/or graveyard into the Deck or Extra Deck. Basically, actitvate Nightmare Throne to destroy Spirit of Yubel in Deck to summon regular Yubel, then you can Link that away so it’s in the graveyard and you shuffle both Yubels back to the Deck to summon this. It cannot be used as Fusion Material, so it can’t be Super Poly’d away or be used to summon more copies of itself. It cannot be destroyed by battle and you take no damage from battles involving this, traditional Yubel stuff to make up for 0/0 stats. When the opponent activates a monster effect, you get a Quick Effect option to tribute this monster to make the activated effect become “Your opponent destroys 1 “Yubel” monster in their hand, Deck, or field” which is a great effect to stop an important monster effect from the opponent and instead destroy Yubel or Spirit of Yubel in the Deck so their floating effects trigger. At the very least, you put 1 Yubel monster back in the Deck to summon this, so it should always be live. Turning an opponent’s monster effect into something that just enables your Deck is pretty powerful. You can also recover this with Nightmare Throne by putting it back in the Extra Deck when Yubel leaves the field, assuming you already got Terror Incarnate on your field probably since you’ll likely run multiple Phantom of Yubel in the Deck, even with the HOPT. Being able to summon a card like this so easily in the Yubel Deck is why it’s now considered a meta contender, even dropping the Super Poly stuff sometimes. You play 3 in Yubel more than likely, and Decks that want to get around certain monster effects can just throw this in the Extra Deck with 3 Nightmare Throne, 1 Yubel, and 1 Spirit of Yubel. Great card to modernize Yubel even more.

Quite possibly the most hyped card of Terminal Revenge, Phantom of Yubel is today’s card, a level 9 DARK Fiend Fusion monster for the Yubel archetype. It’ll take Yubel and any Fiend monster with 0 attack and defense, which is basically every Yubel form and their associated support monsters (Samsara D Lotus and Gruesome Grave Squirmer), so summoning it is quite easy, especially when we get to its summoning condition. As expected, Phantom has the typical stat spread of a Yubel monster of 0 attack and defense, maximizing potential for damage reflection.

Phantom can’t be Fusion Summoned by ordinary means; instead, you’ll have to Special Summon it straight from your Extra Deck by shuffling the Fusion materials from your hand, field, or Graveyard back into the deck or Extra Deck, and Phantom itself can’t be used as a Fusion material. Being able to use Graveyard materials does wonders for this card’s playability, since that means you can easily bring it out during or after your standard Yubel combos. Recycling is a nice bonus as well, something that a combo deck like Yubel appreciates to help its longevity.  As usual, Phantom can’t be destroyed by battle and prevents you from taking battle damage when battling, though unfortunately it has no innate damage reflection, so you’ll have to rely on Nightmare Pain to deal damage with it. Nightmare Throne alone can summon Phantom early since you can get Yubel and Terror Incarnate into the Graveyard to summon it. That brings us to Phantom’s last effect, a hard once per turn Quick Effect that changes an opponent’s monster effect, forcing you (the owner of Phantom) to destroy a Yubel monster in your hand, deck, or field. Much like Grapha, Dragon Overlord of the Dark World, this is a fantastic double-dip effect; it functions as effectively a monster negate that grants you resources as well, since you can destroy Spirit of Yubel and bring out a Yubel for free, or destroy Yubel itself to bring out Terror Incarnate if you wanted to. While this effect is once per turn, summoning Phantom isn’t, so it’s not uncommon to summon multiple Phantoms just for Link fodder as you recycle your Yubel monsters. Phantom alone is a big boost to Yubel, though we’ll be waiting just a bit longer for the deck’s full potential.

+Can be summoned quickly and easily for a monster negate before Nibiru
+Recycles resources
+Additional copies can provide bodies
-Lacks inherent damage reflection
-Doesn’t help much against strong backrow
