“Fish Food,” cannonneers of the Niagara are flogged
if they ever leave their posts, even if the ship
were to go down.
Nice flavor text eh? A two master
with 50% guns that costs 11 points? Hold me back.
Oh the ship’s cannons cannot be eliminated. Well
that’s nice I suppose. Ain’t worth 11 points.
Geeze so far the Americans have gotten the shaft in
this expansion, oh well, at least the special
edition ships (available only in the special edition
box at Wal-mart) don’t suck
My Ratings:
Playability 2 of 5
Collectability 2 of 5
Next Week: More Barbary Coast – next
time it’ll be French. Avast me hearties!

Niagara
11 points is a tad bit above average for just a
two-master. The L movement is kinda low for this guy
if you ask me, but the pair of 3L cannons is decent.
Throw in the ability to shoot with a lost mast
(although not if you're derelict) and you get an
overpriced package if you ask me. Two masts are not
going to last long, and 3L cannons only have a fifty
percent chance of hitting. The L movement is really
lame for this ship; most gunships move faster than
that! And the ability of not losing cannons is
better suited to ships with more masts, because this
only applies to one lost mast (because you can't
shoot while derelict). This really isn't that hot if
you ask me.

Hmmm. Not a great fillip to the American cause this
one...
I have pulled her from my few packs of POTBC, but
confess I haven't played her yet, and can't see
myself doing so in a hurry.
With only two guns, each with a 50:50 chance of
hitting, she's not exactly awful - but she's hardly
a quality secondary gunship either.
There again, with just two measly cargo spaces,
she's certainly not a treasure runner - especially
as you'd certainly need to put a helmsman aboard to
boost that single L move, which is frankly
substandard for a small ship.
Then of course, you'd really need an explorer too,
and - hey: what do you know? No cargo space left.
So maybe she's supposed to be a pocket-gunship after
all? But this would require a captain in addition to
the helmsman, which pushes up the cost of Niagara to
a whopping 16 points. Hmmm. Or for a coupla points
more I could have the Enterprise (albeit without a
skipper). Not much of a competition, is it?
So what about that ability then? Well, no saving
grace there either, because this is one of those
abilities which looks good at first glance, but what
does it actually mean?
Well, it means that if you lose one of your two
masts, you can still fire both your (average) guns.
Hurrah.
However, if you lose both your masts in one hit (and
let's face it, that's quite likely with a smallfry
like this up against a bigger gunship), then - oops
- she's derelict and so can't fire anyway.
Not that great an ability, is it? Good in theory. In
practice, it sucks.
In fact, this ship sucks. Another mediocre
makeweight keeping up WK's card count for this
expansion.
My rating: 1/5. What on earth is it good for?
