Pirates of the Spanish Main – Sir Christopher Myngs

Name: Sir Christopher Myngs

Set: PSM

Card #s: EC-002 (1st), 058 (Unl)

Type: Crew

Cost: 3 Points

Faction: English

Link: Myng’s Marauders

Ability: “Once per turn before you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given the same action twice.

Flavor Text “Myngs was sent to the Spanish Main to remove the Spanish. As usual, however, he wasn't given enough ships to do the job, so he pioneered the English-buccaneer fleet. He personally led the largest of these fleets against the Spanish and Dutch.

Myngs is your prototypical added action crew, but get this, he costs ONLY 3 points.  And read the rules very carefully, he’s not the same as Admiral Morgan, who on the same die roll gives the ship any second action.  With Myngs you have to do the same action.  So either you move twice, or shoot twice (or repair twice).  You can pair this with a generic Captain and then you get both Move and Shoot twice.

Sure, he doesn’t offer the move and shoot like many of his other counterparts, but he’s cheaper too.  At only 3 points you can fit him on smaller ships, or you can link him with Myng’s Marauders (which for an additional 3 points gives you the “Other Ships Don’t Block This Ship’s Line of Fire”), if you really wanted to waste points.  No kids, Myngs is a good crew, but not a great one.  Since the English don’t have a sacrifice captain, he’s the next best thing.

Myngs is a rare, but unfortunately doesn’t really sell for much.  If you have to pay more than $2.50 you’ve paid too much.

Pirates of the Crimson Coast– Commodore Rhys Gryffin Owen

Name: Commodore Rhys Gryffin Owen

Set: POCC

Card #s: 044

Type: Crew

Cost: 6 Points

Faction: English

Ability: Once at the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a result of 6, any ship in your fleet may be given two actions that turn.

Flavor Text: “Owen's rich merchant family has never been accepted into society, so he went to sea to change his social standing. His unique command style of scanty discipline and huge cash rewards for success is possible only by paying his crew from his own pocket. Being a social climber himself, he has figured out Diana Doone's little secret, but since he has not revealed it, some arrangement must have been made.”

Now for six points, you get a 1 in 6 chance of giving ANY ship in your fleet two actions.  That’s sweet, but I think it’s too expensive for most 40-point fleets.  In a larger game, sure he’s excellent, but for the standard he’s way too pricey.  However, since this ability CAN stack with other added action abilities (as long as they are worded differently), conceivably you can give ships THREE or even FOUR actions (The HMS Titan I believe can theoretically get four actions).  But at six points, I would rather put a Generic Captain and Myngs above.  Sure I’m losing a cargo spot, but I have a better chance of getting 2 actions, and they can both be move/shoot.

Owen is also a rare, but again, not very valuable.  I wouldn’t pay more than $3.00

Next time – English Week ends, and we find out what will be our reviews for next week.  Tally ho!

Newbulous

Sir Christopher Myngs

Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given an extra action

Giving any ship the ability of the HMS Titan for only 3 points is a steal. The only problem with this ability is that it is not guaranteed and it does not stack if put on the Titan. If you are unable to use something like Captain Blackheart then by all means throw this guy onboard a warship or even a treasure ship; if you have the room and the points to spare.

Constructed 4/5
Limited 4.5/5 If you’re able to get a decent English Ship

Commodore Rhys Griffin

Once at the beginning of each of your turns, roll a d6. On a result of 6, any ship in your fleet may be given two actions that turn.

Compared to Sir Christopher I am not a huge fan of the Commodore. First off he costs another 3 points and only works on a roll of 6. The bonus is that it’s effect works for any ship in your fleet, but most people only run a warship, a treasure ship, and sometimes a low point combo ship. If it wasn’t for cargo room issues and the new rule stating that you can only have one of each crew/ship per fleet I would recommend using 2x Myngs. In the current meta I see no reason to use this over Myngs on your warship.

Constructed: 1/5 way too overcosted
Limited: 3/5 More beneficial here due to a limited environment and you’ll probably have the extra build points.

Points: 3 very affordable for the ability

Ability: very useful a must have in English fleets

Review: this crew is one of my favorites from the Spanish Main set his ability is extremely useful especially early in the game. He stands out most on any of the larger slower ships because of his possible speed and fighting boost. Definitely recommended this one for all fleets

Points: 6 a bit too costly for me

Ability: Too much like the one above

Review: the only thing in which this differs from the above is because it can be used on any ship. For 3 points more it is priced to high, choosing Myngs means that you can get better crew like a helmsman and explorer + Myngs for the same cost. Not recommended

2/5

Sorry I have been gone have had the sore throat and lots of other stuff to do. please send me your fleets to review at tyrel@columbia.sc

I M Einstein Sir Christopher Myngs

For 3 points you get a crew that on a die roll,a 5 or 6 will give you a double action! That's 1 in 3 cances or 33% chance that you will shoot twice or move or any other action. I would say for the cost it is very good and the effect works well. I give it a 3.5/5

Commodore Ryhs Griffin Owen

Once per turn a 17% chance that there will be a ship that gets an extra action! The downside is the 6 points. I would play it if it were 3-4 points, but 6 is way too costly.
Overall a 2/5
