Week 6 – You Pick ‘Em
Pirates of the Revolution – John Paul Jones
Name: John Paul Jones
Set: POR
Card #: 089
Type: Crew
Cost: 7 Points
Faction: American
Link: Bonhomme Richard
Ability: “Once per turn before you give this ship an
action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be
given the same action twice. This ship’s crew cannot
be eliminated unless she sinks.”
Flavor Text: “A hero of the new revolution, but
considered a pirate by the English, John Paul Jones
took the fight directly to the king, even sinking
ships within European waters.”
See, now this crew member is exactly why I love this
game. John Paul Jones was a historical figure who
figures prominently in the founding of our nation’s
Navy. In fact, his original flag ship, a gift from
the King of France, was re-christened the Bon Homme
Richard in honor of his good friend Benjamin
Franklin. Jones is probably most famous for his
retort to the English demand for surrender, “I have
not yet begun to fight”. Jones was a true American
Patriot and hero and now you can play him in
Pirates!
And what a hero he is! Seven points is very costly,
but you basically get two distinct abilities for
your points. You get the “Same Action” ability when
rolling a 5 or 6 on a D6 (which only cost 3 points
for Myngs, but he’s English), and you get the
ability that your crew cannot be eliminated unless
the ship sinks. Not a bad package, but bloody
expensive. Given that the Americans don’t have much
choice yet in the way of crew, JPJ is still seeing a
lot of play. Especially since he’s linked to one of
the most popular ships in the budding American
fleet.
John Paul Jones (089) Completed Auction Review –
7-27-05
# of completed Auctions: 5
High Amount: $4.50
Low Amount: $0.99
Average Amount $3.31
JPJ is on the move value wise, moving upward too. On
the completed side of the spectrum we’re looking at
a low average brought down by two low sales. The
true value of this card is somewhere between $4 and
$6, and that’s pretty good for a Rare Portrait Card.
My Ratings
Playability 3.5 of 5
Collectability 4 of 5

Pirates of the Crimson Coast– Inquisitor
Sebastián Blanco
Name: Inquisitor Sebastián Blanco
Set: POCC
Card #s: 061
Type: Crew
Cost: 2 Points
Faction: Spanish
Ability: “Place this crew face up during setup.
Reduce the cost of all other crew placed on this
ship by 1.”
Flavor Text: “Don Sebastián de la Peña resigned his
commission as a career soldier to take up the cause
of the Inquisition. His passion for his work burns
clearly in his eyes. Even so, the crew with whom he
serves finds it remarkably easy to discuss personal
matters with the war veteran, who is really using
them all as spies to find Jews and heretics.”
If anyone in the entire set is outright a villain,
it would be this guy. Strange, because his ability
is pretty awesome. Reducing the cost of your crew by
1 point is definitely a savings on the larger ships,
and until Mermaids hit, this crew was almost a
staple in every Spanish Fleet build. Of course it
only makes it worth your while if you have more than
2 points worth of savings to achieve, and that means
your ship has to be LOADED to the gills with crew,
something that these days isn’t really all that
strategic of a move. In the early meta-game these
types of crew were used in quite a few fleets, now
they rarely hit your line-up, as any ship this guy
is on can easily be targeted by Mermaids and stopped
for a number of turns equal to the number of crew on
board. With this guy, that would be at least 3-4
turns.
The good thing is that he’s a common, and if you’re
paying more than a buck or two, you’re paying too
much.

Next time – You Pick ‘Em week ends with the
Constitution. See what we have to say about the
gaming version of “Old Ironsides” on Friday. – Oooh…that’s
an idea for a contest. Here’s the deal: If you can
tell me WHY she’s called Old Ironsides, I’ll send
you a free LE ship from my stash. Email your answer
to me at Wmnoe@yahoo.com with the words “Contest
Entry” in the subject. All correct answers will go
in a hat and I’ll choose one winner. The deadline
for entry will be 8:30 AM PST on Friday, July 29,
2005. I’ll post the winner in my review on Friday.

John Paul Jones-Revolution-American-7pts.
John Paul Jones is very costly at 7pts. You have a
1/3 chance of getting the same action twice. It
would be better if it were any action. The crew
cannot be eliminated uless the ship sinks. That
would be helpful if you have a lot of crew, but with
mermaids out and about: that part isn't so useful. I
give it a 2/5 7pts. is way too much for a crew
Inquisitor Sabastian Blanco-Crimson Coast-Spanish
For two points it takes 1 point off for every other
crew on the ship. Like with John Paul Jones, this
effect helps when you have a loaded crew ship. Which
makes it all more vulnerable to mermaids. 2/5
