Name: Captain Blackheart
Set: POSM
Card #s: PC-002 (Rare), 030 (Rare)
Type: Crew
Cost: 5 Points
Faction: Pirates
Ability: “This
ship may move and shoot using the same move action.
Once per turn, you may eliminate one of this ship's
crew to give her an extra action.
Flavor Text: “Angus
Skyme came to the Spanish Main in the brig of HMS
Prudence. He escaped the gallows and gathered the
roughest crew in the Caribbean. Blackheart shows no
quarter to his victims or crew, and he has killed
many of both for his amusement and profit. He still
bears the scar from the duel he fought with Hawkins
over Lady Arcadia de Sol.”
Sacrificing one’s crew to
Blackheart has become a staple of the game.
This crew card is so valuable, because for an extra
2 points, you get the standard captain ability (move
and shoot) AND a guaranteed extra action when you
need it. And right now, extra actions are the name
of the meta-game. Blackheart and Havanna
Black have the same exact ability and point
cost, so they’re virtually the same crew. Though,
unlike other games, named or unique crew can be used
in multiples in any tournament situation. If you
wish to run a tournament quality fleet, you MUST
have Blackheart.
In POSM, the first set that WK
released, all of the “full portrait” crew cards were
rare, which meant when you pulled one, you did a
dance of joy. That paradigm has changed in the
subsequent releases, but this full portrait crew is
definitely rare. I didn’t manage to get one out of
the 1st edition, but I did pull an
unlimited version. He goes in every one of my
Pirates fleet builds. I suggest you do the same.
Plus the card art is simply gorgeous.

Again, not much of a difference
between the unlimited price and the first edition
price. If you can get him for under two bucks, I’d
say you got a steal. He’s a great piece, though in
somewhat less demand now that Havanna Black
has appeared.
