Pirates of the Barbary Coast – Granada #062
Name: Granada
Set: PBC
Card #: 62
Rarity: Uncommon
Type: Ship
Cost: 13 Points
Masts: 4
Cannons 2S, 3L, 3L, 3S
Cargo: 4
Movement: 1S + 1S
Faction: Spanish
Links: Admiral Alarico Castro and Castro's Loyalists
Ability – “Schooner. This ship gets +1 to her cannon
rolls and boarding rolls against Barbary Corsair
ships. “
Flavor Text – “The mighty Granada is Admiral
Castro’s flagship in the Mediterranean. She is known
for ruthlessly hunting Corsairs to the very ends of
the Earth.”
Wow, a ship with TWO links to it. That’s pretty
nifty. And she’s a schooner too, which means she can
move on her axis after completing a movement. That’s
pretty nice, to make sure you’re well in line with
your cannons for maximum cannon effect. At 13 points
and 4 cargo spots, you’re going to definitely want
to utilize those links. The loyalists give you +1 to
all boarding roles, and the Admiral we’ll be
reviewing on Wednesday, so I don’t want to give it
away yet, but suffice to say, you CAN afford the
added points and cargo holds. Heck even after you
place the two linked crew on board, you’ve got 4
more points of build left to take up with a Captain
for Move and Shoot, or Helmsman for that extra S of
movement. I might not even use the Loyalists because
they are pretty expensive, unless you’re planning on
building a ramming specialist. But using this ship
WITHOUT Admiral Castro (and not Captain Castro), is
a crime.
Uncommons rarely go for much more than a few
dollars, and while Granada is a NICE ship that
Spanish Players will be flocking to in droves, she
still isn’t worth more than a couple bucks.
My Ratings:
Playability 3 of 5
Collectability 2 of 5
Next Time – You already KNOW one of the Crew-fers…who’s
the other? Have to wait and see.

Boring, boring, boring. A weighty 13 points for a
makeweight ship, presumably required to furnish a
sufficient number of new ship cards in the POTBC
expansion. Average movement, average cargo capacity,
marginally better than average guns, and an ability
which is useful if you know you’re going to be
playing against Barbary Corsairs, but otherwise…
This ship isn’t going to see much action in typical
30 – 50 point Spanish fleet builds - not with so
many better options available. It’s a dull and
unoriginal offering. Granada does have the schooner
keyword, which has the theoretical capability (with
a captain aboard) of moving, shooting, and then
heeling on her stern out of the way of a
counterpunch. This requires very adept manouvering
however, and rarely seems to actually work in
practice. And against an enemy ship with a captain
of its own, ‘schoonering’ is next to useless anyway,
since your opponent will simply move in after your
schooner and blast it.
My rating: 1/5. Shouldn’t bother if I were you

Granada
Welcome to Spanish Barbary Coast week. As if the
name doesn't already give it away, this week we'll
be looking at what the Spanish got in the new set.
First up is the Granada, a four-masted 13-point
Schooner with 2S, 3L, 3L, and 3S for cannons. It
also has S+S movement and four cargo spaces, which
is about average for both of those stats. Oh yeah,
and the Granada also gets +1 to cannon and boarding
rolls against Barbary Corsairs. That ability is only
useful if you know you're going up against lots of
Corsairs, or you're playing sealed (and this is a
great uncommon to have in Barbary Coast sealed, by
the way). Essentially, this is a fairly average
ship. The cannons aren't too bad but not awesome
either, and everything else is just average.
Schooner is a much better ability now because of the
removal of the come about action, so the Granada
gets bonus points for that. Overall not too bad.
