I’m back, didja miss me? I’m sure you did. I took a couple weeks off from reviewing for a couple reasons, one is that frankly we were running out of good stuff to review. The other is that UCLA’s Fall quarter started, and the first couple weeks of the quarter are always the hardest (I say that now, with a Mid-term and a Paper due on Thursday of this week.) So here we are, back looking at some nifty Pirate ships, and we have a brand new set to look at, so let’s get to it finally!

The Barbary Corsairs in many ways, replace Pirates as the faction to beat in their titular set. However, they’re not Pirates, and in many ways, that’s a good thing, and a bad thing. It’s bad because the Pirates got themselves shafted in this latest set (but then again so did every other faction). It’s good because it gives a much wider variety in game pieces and factions.

Barbary Coast ships are all either Galleys or Junks, reflecting the historic nature of the pseudo-time period in which Barbary Coast is set. There are none of the square rigged vessels that we’ve become accustomed to seeing. The Galley keyword has been modified somewhat as well. It now reads “Galley Keyword: A ship with this keyword cannot pin or be pinned. If this ship rams, she cannot eliminated a mast from the rammed ship. As a free action, this ship may rotate on her stern in any direction after she completes a move action. If derelict, this ship may move S.” As I have been saying since the first sneak peak came out, WK is trying to make Boarding more interesting, but since they haven’t posted the complete BC Rules set on their official site, I’ll have to reserve judgement on that.

SO all of that is introduction to the first ship in the set, the Nubian Prince. The Barbary Corsairs are affiliated with the Arabic countries in the pseudo-historical setting, so it’s an appropriate name. She has four masts with some god-awful cannons (5L? can you say USELESS). It’s clear that the Galleys will require some help in shooting. The Front 2 Cannons (2L and 3S respectively) are somewhat useful, especially with the ability not to get hit from ships within S length of her. But as a Rare, and a Ship of the Line contender for this faction, she falls sadly short.

I would do my Patented Pricing review, but since the set hasn’t even been out a week, that’s kind of pointless. Thus far, two auctions for her have closed, one at $2 and one at $7.57. I would imagine she’s about a five dollar ship at best.

My Ratings
Playability 3 of 5
Collectability 2.5 of 5

Next time – Crewfer-Twofers don’t ever make people unhappy do they? We’ll take a look at a couple Barbary Corsairs who have DIFFERENT abilities than we’ve seen before.

Aethereal Nubian Price

Wee. 15 points for a Galley ship that basically dodges S cannons. You get a decent four masts and average movement of S+S, not to mention the Galley ability, which does a whole lot of stuff. The cannons on this ship, however, outright suck. 2L, 3S, 4S, and 5L are just not going to do much for you. The 2L will probably hit and the 3S might, but the 4S and the 5L are crap. You definitely need some firing assistance if you want to hit anything with this ship. The other bad part about the iffy cannons is that, with only four cargo slots, this isn't much of a treasure hauler. I'd probably skip this; there are better Galley ships to play IMO.

Oh, and before I finish this, can I just say that the Galley ships look really sexy? :D
