Oh no, Cap’n WildWill missed a review! There’s a
first time for everything, and to make it up to you,
I actually plan to do a retro-review of those two
English characters over the weekend, so keep your
eyes peeled. Plus, you never know when I might throw
some free swag at your way…and I’ve got some extra
swag lately that might find its’ way to some lucky
Pojoer’s collection.
But on to the task at hand, reviewing the
fort-killer that is the HMS Oxford.
Now I’ve just RECENTLY played with my first fort,
and I have to say I was less than impressed. Sure,
it was nifty to actually get the thing built, and it
did take out an opponent’s ship, before it was
soundly THRASHED by a Revenant with full sails. Then
again, I was able to catch that same Revenant a turn
later with my massively over-crewed HMS Titan and
blasted the bits out of it with six cannons (5 + a
musketeer) for 2 straight turns. (I had the ship
crewed with a Brother Virgil and Havanna Black AND
Myngs – one turn I was actually able to get FOUR
actions.)
If you’re going for a fort-killing fleet, this ship
is a MUST for a second gun-boat. She’s actually fast
enough on her own to keep up with the big-boys, and
that ability is very sweet, especially since you’d
have to be within S range to hit with those guns
anyway. But for 12 points, I’d actually like to have
L range guns. Otherwise I see no reason why she
shouldn’t be in your fleet.
Uncommons go for a couple bucks on the secondary
market, this one should be no exception.
My Ratings
Playability 3.5 of 5
Collectability 3 of 5
Next week – it’ll be a hodge-podge, including for
the first time EVER, a crew-fer selected solely by a
message board participant. Don’t know what I’m
talking about? For shame…click here NOW for your
chance to pick the review. http://www.pojo.biz/board/showthread.php?t=199528

HMS
Oxford
I like this ship. 12 points is not *too* pricy for
the medium-sized ship that you get. It'd be nice if
it had an L-range cannon or two, but having four S-
range 2-rank cannons is very nice for 12 points. Add
in the Schooner ability, which can be useful, and
you have a solid set of abilities. So how about we
throw in another useful ability? If this sucker
shoots at a fort within S of it (and unless you
somehow give this thing L-range cannons...how are
you not
going to be within S?), it gets +1 to its cannon
rolls. This ability begs for a Captain on this ship,
because otherwise sailing close to a fort without
doing anything is suicide. Crew-wise, a Captain is
probably all you need as the S+L movement doesn't
*require* a Helmsman, although it could never hurt
to
add one. Overall this is a decent choice due to the
nice mix of benefits you get, and the fact that it
slaughters forts.
