Roanoke
Five masts sure is a bargain for only thirteen
points, but I don't think you're getting quite
enough for what you pay with regard to everything
else. First off, the cannons plain suck. Three
L-range cannons that need a 4 or higher to hit, and
two S-range cannons that need a 5 or 6 to hit? This
is definitely not a gunship. The ability that it
has, letting you use the abilities of pirate crew on
this ship, isn't that great. A lot of the abilities
you want can be found in American form instead, and
the one or two you might want from the pirates
(read: Captain Blackheart) don't really fit on this
ship.
Blackheart requires crew to fuel his ability, but
this ship has crappy cannons (making the Captain
ability pretty pointless). The six cargo slots and
the L-movement speed make it an ok treasure hauler,
but if you want to use Blackheart, you need crew,
and that takes up treasure space. Throw in the fact
that a treasure hauler will want a Helmsman and an
Explorer, which all factions have, and...yeah. You
see what I'm getting at here. It doesn't help that
this thing is a super rare. Maybe I'm missing
something here, but I can't think of many times when
I'd want to have this in my fleet.

The
American Roanoke
Pirate crew may use their abilities on this ship.
The Roanoke is a mystery, vanishing and reappearing
seemingly at will. Captain Morris and his crew,
including a Powhatan-native navigator, however, are
not related to the true ghost ships of the Crimson
Coast.
HEY! I'm back! Katrina had me shipwrecked in a sea
of "real life". No power, water, AC, or anything.
But being a man, some things were not that difficult
*ah, the world is my urinal* But some things were a
bit more difficult. I suffered NOTHING by comparison
to New Orleans or the Gulf Coast. My uncle lives in
one of the hardest hit places. Hes fine, thank God.
But to all those that lost a little or a lot, you
are in my prayers.
They keep blowin, we'll keep rowin!
Hmm... *thinks hard* Roanoke. A famous ship from the
American fleet that legend does not seem to befit
its true ability. 5 masts is always good, and 13
points is below average for 5 mast ship.
Unfortunately the cannons are par/sub par. 3 L rank3
cannons and 2 S rank4 cannons are nothing to waste
postage writing home about. The ability to use
pirate crew can come in handy. Say you have ye old
"sac captain" and are missing a ship for him to call
home. This ship can use him, and combo him with
Hacksaw Riley. 2 turns per turn guaranteed and only
need to store one dispossable crew member. Not bad
says I.
REVIEW:
Points: 4/5 - 13 points for a 5 mast is nice.
Ability: 3/5 - There are better uses for the
resources in my opinion.
Collectibily: 4/5 - A famous name with an ok
ability. I would get one for the collectibility vs.
the playability. There are better American ships.
OVERALL: 3.7/5 Bit above par, but that comes from
the rareness.
Until next time, God Bless America *God knows we
need it*!

Welcome to the first of our “You Pick the Reviews”,
Round Number 2. Today we’re pleased to present,
probably the most desirable ship from the Crimson
Coast set, the Roanoke. You can probably imagine my
elation at pulling this baby in just my second pack
of Crimson Coast. You can probably also imagine my
shock and surprise at my ability to pull FOUR
ADDITIONAL copies since then. She’s supposed to be a
VERY RARE card, and from experience and talking to
other players, she’s really seeded at less than one
per box. I just have the lucky touch I guess.
For a long time, (well, not really a long time,
about two-three weeks until the Convention Mega Pack
came out), this was the ONLY American ship
available. At least she was still playable, since
Pirates can use their abilities on this ship. That
essentially made her a Pirate ship when she was
first issued. Now, she’s been eclipsed by both the
Enterprise and the Constitution as the gunboat of
choice. Still for only 13 points, she doesn’t stink,
and can EASILY fit in a lot of fleets.
The problem is, she’s not all that great. Yes,
having 5 masts on your gunboat is fantastic. But
with 2 of them being level 4s, (meaning only a 33%
chance to hit) and the other 3 being level 3s (50%
chance to hit), you’re only going to hit on 2-3 per
turn. I’d rather have a gunboat with a higher
percentage of hitting per shot. Her next best asset
being the 6 cargo spots, and you’re looking at a
very mediocre ship.
Ebay Closed Auction Report 09-12-05
Total # of closed auctions: 7
High Amount: $16.75
Low Amount: $ 9.50
Average Amount: $11.99
I can tell you that I’ve already sold two of these
bad-boys on Ebay for $9.50 each. Easiest dough I’ve
made in a long time. She’s really only worth it as a
collectible, and trade bait, as I’ve mentioned,
she’s not that playable. But if you HAVE to have
one, check my trade thread, I’ve still got 2 more to
trade/sell.
My Ratings:
Playability 2.5 of 5
Collectability 4 of 5
