Pirates of the Revolution – Jean Lafitte #015
Name: Jean Lafitte
Set: Pirates of the Revolution
Card #: 015
Rarity: Rare
Cost: 5
Link: Pride
Ability: “Once at the beginning of each of your
turns, roll a d6. On a result of 6, any ship in your
fleet may be given two actions that turn.”
Flavor Text: “The Gentleman Pirate is so infamous in
New Orleans that the French, American and Spanish
leaders all have placed a bounty on his head. He has
honored them with a bounty in return.”
Today’s Crew-Fer starts out with a real historical
figure, the infamous pirate Lafitte, who was the
scourge of the early 19th century Gulf of Mexico.
Lafitte was never caught, and his demise remains a
mystery to this day. Despite being on the wrong side
of the law Lafitte offered several hundred troops to
fight for the Americans against the British during
the War of 1812. He created two “kingdoms”, one in
New Orleans just after the Louisana Purchase, and
one in Texas after being run out of New Orleans
circa 1817. His whereabouts become murky after 1826,
though a “journal” of his was published over 100
years later, claming he got married and raised some
kids. The true story of Lafitte will probably never
be discovered, but he sure is one of the more
colorful and interesting pirates that ever lived.
And as such, his gaming counterpart is a powerful
figure indeed. He has the same ability as Commodore
Rhys Griffin Owens (reviewed here: http://pojo.com/pirates/CotD/2005/July/20.shtml),
but Lafitte is one point cheaper! That’s Pirates for
you. Since they are the game’s titular faction, they
get the best and cheapest abilities! Not only that,
but Lafitte is linked to his flagship, the Pride,
and when he’s on board that 13 point cost 3 masted
vessel, he takes up no cargo space! Now if he could
only move and shoot!
Unfortunately, Lafitte is not a very popular rare
card. There are no recent auctions on Ebay for him,
but he’s not that difficult to pull. As with any
rare crew, you shouldn’t have to spend more than
five bucks for him.

Playability 3 of 5
Collectability 2.5 of 5
Pirates of the Crimson Coast – Capitaine Gaston de
St. Croix #085
Name: Capitaine Gaston de St. Croix
Set: Pirates of the Crimson Coast
Card #: 085
Rarity: Rare
Cost: 5
Ability: Once per turn before you give this ship an
action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be
given the same action twice. This ship gets +1 to
her cannon rolls against English ships.
Flavor Text: The bold Capitaine Gaston de St. Croix
is a member of one of France's oldest and most
honored families, and his dashing good looks and
forays against the English have caught the eye of
Vicomtesse de Richelieu. Because she outranks him,
it's quite possible that her interest is personal.
Her attention has thus far been discreet, but that
may change soon.
Our esteemed Capitaine has virtually the same
ability as the Crimson Coast version of Jack
Hawkins, except that it costs him one point less,
and the second ability is different. Where Jack has
the crew cannot be eliminated ability, Gaston gets
+1 against English. Again, the French and English
rivalry (rivalry? Try outright hatred) makes it’s
way into the game. You’ll find that the French get a
lot of anti-English abilities, and the English,
well, they get a lot of anti-Pirate abilities. Go
figure. This crew should be a staple of any well
balanced French fleet. If he’s not in your fleet, go
get him now.
Which shouldn’t be too hard. No actual sales on
Gaston. Perhaps the French just aren’t ready for the
major leagues eh?
My Ratings:
Playability 4 of 5
Collectability 2 of 5.

The first thing that you notice is the cost for this
crew. 5 points is pretty expensive for crew, so it
had better come attached with a good ability. So on
each turn you get to roll a die, and if you nail a
six, you get to give the Titan/Enterprise ability to
any ship in your fleet that turn. The ability to
give any ship two actions that turn is obviously
very powerful. However, you have to hit exactly a
six, which, as my "higher" math skills have
determined, means each turn you only get a one in
six shot of getting the effect. This really hurts
the ability, in my eyes. I don't think I'd want to
pay five points to have such a low chance of even
getting the ability, and have no other abilities or
anything attached to the crew. I might pay six or
even seven points to have this dude if I could also
get the ability on a five. However, he doesn't do
this, and so instead we're stuck with a pretty iffy
crew member.

Capitaine Gaston de St. Croix
Another five point crew. This time you get to give
the ship he's on the same action twice if you roll a
5 or a 6, and you get +1 against English ships. The
bonus against English ships isn't that big a deal
(although it can be fun to put this on Monday's Le
Dauphin Royal if you play against a lot of English),
but the other ability isn't bad to have. Obviously
this guy is pretty awesome if you throw in a
Captain, but that's eight points you're spending on
two crew. If I really wanted to use this combo, I'd
just use a crew that gives the extra action ability
with no other bonuses, since it's cheaper. I also
wish this guy had the Captain ability, but then he'd
be, you know, bah-roken. This guy isn't bad but not
my first choice by any means.
