Pirates of the Revolution – Robinson
#037A
Name: Robinson
Set: POR
Card #s: 037A
Rarity: Common
Type: Crew
Cost: 0 Points
Faction: English
Ability –
“Always place this crew face up; it
cannot be eliminated unless its ship sinks. Crew
placed on this ship cost no points, but they always
each take up one cargo space. When this ship is hit,
roll a d6. On a result of 5 or 6, move the crew on
this ship with the highest point cost to a wild
island chosen by the player to your left.
Flavor Text
– “Found on an uncharted island,
Robinson can't remember the name of his ship, its
fate, or the reason he was left behind. Woe betide
the crew that rescues him!”
Today’s choices are from Topnwe, our
newest COTDer. Robinson here is obviously based on
the Daniel DeFoe character Robinson Crusoe, and if
you HAVEN’T read that book by now, you really
should. It’s a classic for a reason. DeFoe also
wrote “Moll Flanders” which is one of the first true
novels, and also required reading for High School.
I found it tedious and boring, just like Dickens.
And just like Dickens, I didn’t appreciate it until
I was much, much older. “Robinson Crusoe” however,
is both fun and a statement on society, much like
the earlier Jonathan Swift piece “Gulliver’s
Travels.” And if you think “Gulliver’s Travels” is
a kiddy story, you have a lot to learn.
English lesson over. Robinson is an
interesting piece, because it’s a dual edged sword.
On one hand you get to place as many crew on board
as you can fit without worrying about point cost.
On the other, if you get hit, you lose a crew a
third of the time. To me, that’s just too much of a
gamble. And not only do you lose a crew, you lose a
crew with the HIGHEST point total. Think about that
for a second. Want to lose your Myngs or Rhys
Griffin Owen? Didn’t think so.
I can see how in a sealed-pack
tournament he would be a detriment to whomever gets
stuck with him, but I don’t see him getting a lot of
play in a standard game.
Commons sell for a buck or two at the
most. Robinson does have the Event “Raft” attached
to his card, so it’s not a worthless pull out of a
pack. But he’s just not that great.

Pirates of the Spanish Main #EC-003,
#059 – Carbon Charlie
Set: POSM
Card #s: EC-003, #059
Rarity: Common
Type: Crew
Cost: 3 Points
Faction: English
Link: Powder Pete
Ability
– “When this ship is docked at your
home island, you may eliminate one treasure. It
becomes a 3S cannon that can be eliminated only when
the ship sinks.
Flavor Text
– “Always covered in soot from his
forge, "Carbon Charlie" makes some of the finest
firearms in the world. His crowning achievement—the
secret of which he will likely take to the grave—is
the world's largest cannon.”
Now here’s a crew that is actually
quite useful, you can create a 3S cannon out of any
treasure once you’re docked at your home island.
Pretty handy if you ask me. And for only 3 points,
there’s nothing to say that you can’t keep doing it
over and over, though if you get to do it more than
once I’d be surprised. Linking him to Powder Pete
doesn’t really do much, since his ability only gives
you +1 gold to any treasure. Carbon Charlie also
has a basic crew member on his card, I THINK it’s an
explorer, but I’m not 100% sure. I’d have to check
the actual card, and I’m far too lazy to do that at
the moment.
Once again, a common crew shouldn’t
cost you more than a couple bucks. This one has
more playability than most, so it’ll be on the upper
end of the pricing spectrum, but still, if you’re
spending more than $2.00 on him, you’re spending too
much.
My Ratings:
Playability 3 of 5
Collectability 2 of 5.
Next Time – Make up week finishes
with another popular Spanish Ship. After that?
Only the COTD crew knows.
