One of the things that makes
collectible card/strategy games unique is that the
games do not stay static. To that end, WizKids is
adding something new to the game with every set.
Most of the new game mechanics in each set are
related to actual game play, but for South China
Seas WK decided to abandon the Participation Prizes
that they had experimented with for Barbary Coast.
Even though Participation Prizes were very popular,
they were merely cardboard crew, and none of the
pieces appeared to be very playable. Fans bemoaned
the loss of styrene ships, and WK listened. For SCS
we get the first set of LEs that are not merely
‘ghost ship’ versions of existing ships. These LEs
are all new ships unavailable from anywhere else.
The French get three ships in the SCS
LE set, two one masted galleys and a two-masted
schooner. Le Triomphant has a minimal cargo
compartment, a decent move, and a decent cannon. So
why is she 10 points? Auto-move and shoot, well,
make that shoot and run-away, which for smaller
ships is actually better than moving and then
shooting. Is she a must-have for the French? No.
Not by a long-shot, but she does make a nice
addition to your fleet.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure this ship
is even available yet. There’s no auctions for it
at all. I’ll take the stance that she won’t be
worth more than a couple bucks though.
My Ratings:
Playability 3 of 5
Collectability 3.5 of 5
