Gentil de la Barbinais
Points: 4
Ability: This crew gets +1 to her cannon rolls
against any non-French ship.
This is the French version of a new crew type
which was introduced in Pirates of The Barbary
Coast with Brent Rice for the Americans. I
really do like this ability. I use Brent Rice a
lot, and when I get Gentil de la B (and I have
him on the way, courtesy of a trade), he will
become a well-used addition to my French fleet.
My only slight reservation is that 4 points
seems a little overpriced – I think 3 would have
been more reasonable. Nonetheless, the simple
act of adding +1 to your cannon rolls, means
that paired with the right ship (La Ville de
Paris, for instance), you have virtually
guaranteed hits with every single gun you fire
(unless you roll a 1, which is of course a
guaranteed miss anyway!) Bl**dy fabulous!
I also particularly like his portrait – a
throwback to some of the great miniature
portraits of the original Spanish Main set. I
can already see this guy grinning out from the
lid of one of the next set of special collectors
tins Wizkids release (hint hint!)
My rating – 4/5. I like this crew type a lot.
And I like the French - so this is a winner!
Ken Wang Cho
Points: 2
Ability: Jade Rebellion Crew may use their
abilities aboard this ship.
Hmm. Can’t get excited about this one. Ken is
British Chinese – in other words, he’s a
reference to the historic British link to Hong
Kong. His ability allows you to use Jade crew on
a British ship, and this costs you two points.
And…
That’s about it.
Not very exciting is it?
And not very useful either, although it does
allow you to deploy one or two of the more
exotic Jade named crew onto a British ship.
Llike Zheng Li Kwan, for instance - the
sacrifice captain who doesn’t also give you the
basic captain move and shoot ability - so he’s a
bit feeble isn’t he?
In short, why would you bother with this at all?
My rating – 1/5. Back to Barbie, Ken.
