This is one big, BAD fighting ship, typical of the
English in general and the first series in
particular. I don't know who the original Lord
Algernon was, but his name sounds kind of placid,
whereas the ship that bears his name is a thug
indeed. Her cannons are about as good as you can
get, and she can spank those pesky "cannot be hit by
L cannon" ships as well. Her special ability
effectively makes her a six-masted ship against most
enemies; a one-masted ship can't hurt her at all as
long as she's intact. If I were the other player and
saw this ship coming, I'd run the other way.
Fortunately, running away is not difficult, as the
Lord Algernon is drop-dead slow. Even with a
Helmsman, she's still only up to S+S. And that
brings us to this ship's other weakness; her cargo
capacity is small by any standard, and absolutely
puny when you look at most five-masted ships.
She needs a Helmsman; this is not negotiable. She
needs a Captain, or a named crew that gives her a
move+shoot; Thomas Gunn the Younger is my favorite
in this role. And that leaves only one cargo space
free for another crew. Some good choices for this
third slot would be Admiral Morgan (two actions 1/3
of the time) or the brand-new Lt. Henry Ducie Chads
(SAT and +1 vs Pirates). Id' recommend a world-hater
crew, but the English don't seem to have one
(correct me if I'm wrong).
Another worthwhile third crew would be a Shipwright.
If you're down by only one mast, his repair action
effectively undoes two hits against your ship.
Morgan and the Shipwright would make a great team;
do your repair with one action, and move and blast
somebody with the second.
But this ship doesn't have enough room for both,
unless you give up the Captain.
This ship is one fightin' so-and-so, if you can
catch up with your prey. Her low speed is a
handicap, but her low cargo is the real problem. I
give her average marks because her point cost is
fair, but one more cargo space would have made a
world of difference. Sorry, Algy.
