Le
Loup-Garou 076
Today we have the French Le Loup-Garou. This ship in
terms of treasure hauling (only 3 cargo) and combat
(3 masts; 3L, 4S, and 5S from front to back
respectivly) isn't very good. But being a shcooner,
a ghost ship, and having a move of 1S+1L makes for
quite the manuverable ship. If
you put the right crew on her(maybe a captain,
something to add to the cannon roll), she could have
potential. Maybe put one of the specialists on it.
Just use the L-range front cannon all the time.
That could be a pain for your opponent. A specialist
set up could look like this: (Firepot Specialist,
Helmsman, Captain). Turns this ship into a
manuverable menace.
Playability: 2/5
Playability with right crew: 3.9/5 (falls just short
of being a worthy ship here)
Collectability: 2/5

Le
Loup-Garou
The first question about Le Loup-Garou must be
‘why?’
Clearly there’s no historical basis whatsoever for
ghost ships - but there is at least some kind of
fictional / mythic basis for pirate ships of this
unnatural stamp.
But a French ghost ship?? Sacre Bleu!
More relevantly, at 17 points she’s horribly
expensive. You can get several of the big French 5
masters for less than that - and they have good guns
aboard too.
Loup-Garou has only three masts, average to crap
cannon (3, 4, and 5 rank respectively), average
cargo space and average movement speed. Impressed?
So that Ghost Ship ability must really be worth all
those extra points then, right?
Wrong.
Ghost Ship is a useful ability, sure – you can’t be
rammed, and can sail through islands, terrain and
other ships.
But it’s not worth all those extra points, and the
designers clearly didn’t think so either until
recently, since if you compare Deliverance, she only
costs two points more than Loup-Garou, and yet she’s
a 5 master with a full complement of 3-rank guns.
So where’s the sense in that?
There again, where’s the sense in any of the points
allocations in this game?!
My rating – 1/5. If Loup-Garou cost 10 or 11 points,
she would be a useful and unusual addition to my
favourite faction, the French. But at 17 points?
They’re having a laugh.
