Ability: All of this ship's cannons have L range.
This is a good ship, ideal as a second fighter in a
40-point game, or as the core of your fleet in a
smaller game. Her cannons are okay, and her ability
means that no one is safe from her. Whether your
enemy uses a "cannot be hit by L cannons" ship or a
"cannot be shot within S range"
ship, the Sultan can smack it. The low speed is a
concern, but you can always add a Helmsman.
Sultan is an oddity in one respect; she has a
bigger-than-average cargo capacity that you usually
see on gold runners and 5-masted behemoths.
Resist the temptation to use her for gold, though;
she's too slow and too expensive for that role. I
made that mistake once, so there's no need for you
to find out the hard way.
So what can you do with all that cargo space? You
could stuff her with low-priced crew like Cannoneers
and Musketeers to make her even more effective (at
the risk of meeting Mermaids), or you can use her
for repeated boarding actions, with plenty of room
to store your ill-gotten gains. Or you can leave an
enemy gold ship derelict, explore it, and make off
with the best coins before sinking it. Or you can
just grab a little gold from a wild island on your
way home for repairs after a rousing battle.
This is a good ship. I'd like her better if she was
a little faster, but her price is reasonable. The
trick is to make effective use of her cargo space
and her special ability.
