Pirates of the Revolution - Jarvis #075
Name: Jarvis
Set: POR
Card #: 075
Rarity: Common
Type: Ship
Cost: 15 Points
Masts: 3
Cannons: 3L, 3L, 3L
Cargo: 4
Movement: 1S+1L
Faction: American
Ability: Schooner. L-range cannons cannot hit this
ship.
Flavor Text: Jarvis was built by the David family to
hunt pirates plaguing Charleston. Moored near shore
to lure ships onto the rocky coast, if the cannons
don't destroy the enemy, the rocks will.
Hey guys and gals, I'm back. Sorry for the hiatus,
but have been really busy at home lately. Looking
for a full time job (which I should be starting
tomorrow!), getting the apartment ready for the
birth of our daughter (the target date is still
October 5), and basically enjoying the little
relaxation time I have left until that joyous day. I
can't promise that I'll be consistent in my reviews
over the next couple months, but at least I'll be
trying.
And it's not like we're running out of ships and
crew to review either - there's over 500 game pieces
so far, and we've reviewed, what 1/4th of them?
Thing is though, I need your suggestions as to what
to review - so if you have a thought, why don't you
check out the "Card Review Suggestions Thread" in
the forums - here's a link:http://www.pojo.biz/board/showthread.php?t=332142
Now, this week is American week, just because that's
what I picked. I love theme weeks, so if you want to
put together a theme week you think we should
review, lemme know!
As to the Jarvis: I love the ability, love the
cannon strength, love the cargo capacity. Hate the
cost. A nice 3 masted schooner from the Revolution
set that appears to be seeing a lot of play lately.
I'm not 100% sure why, since there are easily better
costed ships that do pretty much the same thing, but
then again, those 3L cannons that can't be shot at
in retailiation by L range cannons are certainly
appealing. I'd use her if she were a few points less
in price.

This ship looks quite flexible. It's fast,
maneuverable, and has fair cargo capacity, so I can
round up gold with it. Or, with three decent L-range
cannons and its special ability, I can put a Captain
on it and go out looking for trouble. In this role,
its speed and Schooner keyword will let me, not the
enemy, choose the battles.
But then I look at the point cost. Yikes! That's way
too much for a gold-runner. For a three-masted
fighter, it's still too high; the going rate for
three-masters is more like 8-10 points. The special
ability sounds good until you remember that a
majority of the cannons in this game are S-range.
You'd have to pick and choose your targets
carefully.
How would I use this ship? Her special ability makes
her a fort-killer. Should the enemy use a big ship
like HMS Dreadnought or the Le Superbe with all L
cannons, you can lay a major smackdown on it. But if
the foe isn't kind enough to set up such targets for
you, the Jarvis is just an average fighter for an
above-average price tag. You can add crew like CPO
Richard to make her a better fighter, but there's no
way to make her a good value. I'd rather spend the
15 points on the Bonhomme Richard, with five masts
and better cannons.
I'd like to recommend this ship, I really would. But
not for that point cost.
