Ability: This ship may dock at an enemy home island
and load one treasure. If able, she must leave on
your next turn.
Somehow, when Frozen North came out and I was
browsing for really good ships, I missed this one.
Her name is a mystery - the only white thing on her
is the S-rank cannon symbol on her jib, and I don't
think that counts. Not that it matters; this ship
has just about everything going for her. Good
cannons, good cargo, and good speed combine to make
her one of those very few wonderful ships that can
fight and run gold at the same time. Give her a
Captain and send her out to blast the enemy or load
treasure, as the situation requires. She needs no
other crew. If you want to add a few generic crew to
make her an even more dangerous fighter, she has the
cargo space and the point cost to allow it.
She also has the speed, and the damage resistance
(four masts), to rob an enemy home island and get
home with the stolen goods, something few other
ships can do. A ship like this can dance off an
enemy's home coast for a turn or two and throw his
entire fleet into disorder. His fighters have to
react to your threat of robbery, and his gold ships
won't want to get too close to your cannons.
Meanwhile, your other ships are doing what they
please, and the White Rose decides whether to
actually rob the home island, or just turn aside for
some risk-free wild-island gold.
The only thing I don't like about this ship is her
price. If she'd come out in the Revolution set or
earlier, she probably would have cost 12-13 points.
As it is, she's one of the costliest ships in the
Pirate fleet. That said, she's also among the best
values among those expensive Pirates, and one of the
few excellent ships in the entire Frozen North set.
P.S. Someone at WizKids needs to learn how to
assemble a ship. The largest sail on four-masted
schooners is the aftmost mast; it doesn't go in the
middle.

White Rose
I looked at White Rose and thought I could see a use
for her as a blockade ship in a fighting fleet. She
is an adequate gunship; 4 masts, decent cannons (2S,
3Lx3), excellent cargo space of 5 and a good turn of
speed, though she is expensive. Fill part of the
hold with crew, perhaps a move-again/captain crew,a
helmsman crew and perhaps a crew of your choice.
Leave some cargo space open for treasure. During the
game ignore wild islands and steer the White Rose to
the enemy island. Hang around the island waiting for
returning treasure hauler's and pounce at will.
Anything that gets by is acceptable because you will
dock and move away in the time it takes for opposing
treasure ships to make a second trip for gold. Again
you want to hang around the home island to pounce
the enemy. One thing to keep in mind is to have
another ship to tangle with the enemy gunfighter as
the White Rose is only adequate as a fighter. This
sneaky ship gets a 4/5.

The
white rose at first glance looks like an ordinary
schooner. but on a quick look at its stats you'll
know its definitely something more. It has 5 cargo,
and it moves a S+L. It also has an ability that lets
it steal a treasure from your opponent's home island
-- one of my personal favorites for treasure battles
-- and it definitely goes with the ship. This ship
is definitely meant for a treasure ship, but if you
are doing a deathmatch, she can stand her own. Three
average cannons and one good one, if you load her
with a captain she can just sail in and shoot them
down. But she was definitely meant for treasure. Put
an explorer on her, and you can sail past your
opponent, load a treasure from their home, and pick
up 3 more on your way back. As an exceptional
treasure ship, I give it a 4/5. |

Flavor Text: Captain Wordsworth resigned his
commission in England's navy for a life of crime,
turning his keen planning skills to nefarious ends.
Well, the White Rose is one of the few ships in the
Frozen North set to have the honor of S+L move. With
a helmsman, the White Rose moves at S+L+S and still
has 4 cargo left.
Next suggestion? Perhaps Gunner, also from the
Frozen North set, could provide the same action
twice if you roll a 5 or 6, would be a nice
addition. A captain might also be useful to get out
of any 'entanglements', and its 4 masts allow it to
survive longer than other ships that have this
ability. A great thing about this ship is that it
can treasure run, steal gold, and even fight if need
be, with slightly below average cannons. This ship's
versatility is its greatest asset, in my opinion.
While slightly expensive at 15 points, the White
Rose is most definitely one of the best ships of FN,
and a great asset to the Pirate nation.
Err...faction.
My score? The White Rose earns a 4/5. |
