Name: Thrud
Card: FN #036 (Rare)
Points: 15
Faction: Pirate

Masts: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Cargo: 2 (rating: 2 / 5)
Moves: S+S (rating: 3 / 5)
Guns : 3S,3S x2 (rating: 3 / 5)
Hit %: 200 (S), 0 (L)
Keyword: Longship.
Ability: This ship may dock at an enemy home island and load up to two treasures. If able, she must leave on your next turn.

The Thrud is an evil-looking customer. Her figurehead looks like a buzzard more than anything else. Her speed is pretty good for a longship, and she has all the other advantages of longships, especially the second shot from each cannon. She also has the disadvantages of longships - you lose two shots for each mast that falls, and her cargo capacity is low.

That low cargo means you'll never be able to take advantage of her special ability. To steal two treasures, she can carry no crew. That, in turn, means her speed is limited (no Helmsman), and she'll never get the first shot off (no Captain) if the enemy defends his home island.

Only a totally incompetent admiral would let an S+S-moving ship get to his home, load up, and make a clean getaway without hitting back somehow, even if it's just ramming with a gold ship.

This ship would make a decent second fighter; with a Captain and a Helmsman on board, she could chase and sink enemy gold ships with little difficulty. But 15 points is a lot to pay for a ship that's meant to go in harm's way, but can take only two hits. Those fifteen points would go a lot further if spent on another FN Pirate ship, the White Rose, which we just reviewed. Like so many recent ships, she's a decent boat, ruined by her price tag.

This ship was my first longship. As I opened the pack I got excited, and then extremely disappointed. She really isn't good for anything except collecting. Sure, she can sail in and plunder 2 treasures from your enemies home island... but seeing as you need to put a helmsman on her just to make her fast enough to get through to your enemies home island, you only have 1 cargo left to use. Why waste it on your enemies home?

No, that isnt how to use it. and you really can't use it as a fighter either. sure it gets 2 hits per cannon, but it only averages 2 successful hits per turn. You need to put a helmsman and a captain on for sure, and there goes its two cargo slots. I guess that you could sail it in as a sacrifice just to do some minor damage, but for 20 points (captain and helmsman included)? i dont think so.

Really not the ship that you want to be the highlight of your fleet. Or even second in command. Or even in your fleet. Honestly, I would keep this ship on the sidelines. With its mediocre stats and its outrageous point cost, i give it a 2/5.

When comparing the 2 mast longship to yesterday's review, White Rose, this ship pales in comparison. For the same cost, you lose 2 masts, 3 cargo, have the speed slightly reduced, yet gain the Longship keyword and a more spiffy HI raider ability. This means that Thrud has 4 cannons, all short range. A plus is that it can move while derelict. That is always helpful.

However, I'll try not to have any bias.

First of all, Amos is a great plus to this ship. He takes up no cargo, and you can throw a helmsman on, thus allowing you to steal 2 treasures from your enemy's home island.

If it gets in a fight, there's a slim chance that it will make it. SLIM.

If you're playing in the FN set, use White Rose instead. In sealed, Thrud might be slightly useful. But the White Rose is still more.

This ship is just too expensive for its cost, especially when you could get a 5 mast ship in its place. Thrud is a perfect example of misplaced abilities.

In all, Thrud earns a 2/5.
