Ability: If this ship wins a boarding party, she may
capture the crew with the highest point cost instead
of eliminating it. A captured crew becomes cargo
worth its point cost in gold when unloaded at your
home island.
I haven't been overwhelmed with most of the
longships I've reviewed so far. Today, that changes.
The Wodin, named for the head honcho of the Nordic
mythos, is a nice ship indeed.
Her speed isn't great, but adding a Helmsman isn't
hard. Cargo capacity is well above average. Her guns
are also quite good, and like all longships, she
fires each of them twice. I see this ship with a
Helmsman and a Captain, knocking down all the
enemy's masts but one, then boarding to use her
ability. That ability is doubly hurty, because it
not only takes away the enemy's best crew, it turns
that crew into money in your bank. To top it all
off, she's a good-looking ship.
The Wodin's one big drawback is her sky-high cost,
which might be a record for a two-masted ship. Her
point cost in most factions will buy you a five-masted
ship that can take a pounding as well as dish one
out. The Wodin does not have anything like that kind
of damage resistance. Two hits and she's done;
eighteen points down the hopper.
If she went up against other 18-pointers like the
USS Enterprise or HMS Leicester, is there any
question at all who would win? Even the Longshanks,
at only one-third the points, will usually beat the
Wodin if the Pirate gets the first shot.
This is a flaw all longships share, which makes them
bad investments.
The Wodin has everything else going for it, but the
high point cost and low mast count are two big
strikes against her.

Back
to the COTD reviews. This longship has a
capture-ransom ability for crew on other ships,
and it can easily be executed if you put a
helmsman onto it. Sure, its a lot of points, and
a helmsman would make it more. It has cannons
that can stand up to another ship though, and it
has a high cargo. It can easily be used as a
treasure ship.
But
back to the boarding. If you're trying to board
a big ship, then you'll probably not get a
chance to win because you would have to roll a
pretty high number and your opponent would have
to roll pretty low. Not saying its impossible,
but it isnt probable. 18 points is a lot for an
ability that can only be used a small amount of
the time.
Overall, this is a nice ship but its a bit too
pricy. I give it a 2.5/5.

Flavor Text:
Walord Mimir has trained
his crew to look out for enemy dignitaries, having
made his name by ransoming captains, dukes, and
kings.
Hmm…at first
glance, this ship is unimpressive. A boarding
related ability on a 2 mast ship for 18 points?
What's this? L move? I don't know if a helmsman
would help. At least this ship can kind of fight,
but that's all it's got going for it. It has 5
cargo, but the Wodin would be a pitiful treasure
runner. My suggestion: Don't use this ship. If you
have the spare 18 points, there's a lot of things
you could do with it. Just don't use it on this
ship.
My rating is a
generous 1/5. |
