In real life, the Royal Navy would often put
captured ships into service, even using them against
their former owners. But a Viking longship flying
the White Ensign? Well, this game isn't about real
life.
Her cargo is quite small, and her speed is low,
which makes her a poor gold ship. Her one mast makes
her a poor boarder. Like all longships, she fires
each cannon twice, but that means she loses two
shots each time she loses a mast; this makes her a
poor fighter, her special ability notwithstanding.
The best thing I can think of to do with her is give
her the usual Captain and Helmsman, and use her
against enemy gold ships.
But why bother using this ship as a raider when you
could raid with HMS Guy Fawkes, which adds a 3S
cannon and a cargo space, has the same speed and
ability, isn't a Longship, but costs 1 point less?
HMS Bartlesville is one of the least expensive
longships, but her ability isn't suited to a one-masted
ship, and the English have many better ships to
choose from.

HMS
Bartlesville
Typically I like the english and dislike the
longships. In this case the dislike wins out. HMS
Bartlesville has an excellent cannon, firing twice
at
2+ to hit due to her "world-hater" ability. She
suffers from the speed loss of the set and having
only a single mast.
Have her follow a larger ship into the fray and
sneak behind the enemy ship where retaliation is
less likely (unless your fighter is sunk). A longer
range cannon would be what I want on this ship. I am
not sure if there is an English personality with
that ability. HMS Bartlesville is a nice little
support ship, a bit high for the cost. However nice
does not work when dealing with Pirates, 2/5.

Well, I
guess they had to put in a longship without the
"load treasure from your enemy's home island"
ability. It's still not very good. The way I see
it, the only way to make longships effective is
to give them 3 or more masts, because they are
just too expensive to use as sacrifice ships.
This one has a nice ability, but only 1 mast.
So lets
look at how she can be used. You can just sail
in, shoot twice, and then get killed. Or, you
can sail in, try to evade them for a little,
shoot twice, and then... get killed. Well, that
doesn't seem exactly correct, does it?
It
doesn't have any cargo and its move is only a L.
True, it has a good cannon and a killer ability,
but.... it only has the one mast. Once you sail
in, you have to hope for either really bad
cannon rolls from your opponent, or that your
opponent has the IQ of a dead rock. I'll give
this ship a very genorous 2/5.

Speed: L

Flavor Text:
The queen of England herself ordered this ship built
in order to extend England's empire to lands where
the sun never sets.
HMS Bartlesville, which is 12 points, is probably
one of the worst things to spend 12 points on. I
think that by now, virtually everyone who plays
pirates knows that the only good longships are the
USS Kettering, and in my opinion, the Naegling. So
yeah, don't use it.
It's a nice looking ship, but that's all that it has
got going for it.
Sure, two 1s cannons are nice, but I'd rather pay
another point for HMS Royal, which is going to be
reviewed later. Or, even pay one less point and get
the infinitely better HMS London.
Ummm...
HMS Bartlesville gets a 1.5/5
At least it's cheaper than most longships.... |
