Name: HMS Shetland
Card: FN #040 (Rare)
Points: 16
Faction: England
Masts: 5 (rating: 5 / 5)
Cargo: 5 (rating: 3.5 / 5)
Moves: S (rating: 1 / 5)
Guns : 2S,3S,3S,3S,4S (rating: 3.5 / 5)
Hit %: 250 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Once per turn, if this ship is touching
another ship, she can randomly take as much treasure
from the other ship as she can carry.
This is England's big ship in the Frozen North
series, and she ain't no Shetland sheepdog. Like
most big English ships, she's slow, well-armed, and
reasonably priced. It's the "slow" part that
concerns me the most.
Even adding a Helmsman only brings her speed up to
"average." A five-masted ship has to have a Captain,
or a named crew with the Captain ability. I like
Hermione Gold for this ship, since she gives the
move/shoot and a +1 against non-English ships. As a
pure fighter, this one isn't too bad.
What if you want to use her ability? That's a very
different story.
Ships with lots of gold on them tend to be fast, too
fast for this Shetland pony to catch. The only use I
can see for her ability is to ignore enemy gold
ships on their outbound voyage, get between them and
their home port, and ram to steal their goodies as
they try to return home. The fact that you pick the
stolen treasures at random is nice; the enemy can't
stick you with his 1-point coins like he would if
you were boarding. You don't even have to do a
boarding action if you don't want to. But it's kind
of a waste of a five-masted ship.
If we compare her to my favorite English thug, HMS
Titan, the Shetland comes up short. The Titan has
much better cannons, higher speed, and a more useful
ability, for only one point more. If I were to use
HMS Shetland, I'd ignore the special ability
altogether, and just fight her.
