Cadet-Captain Mike |
Name: Olof Linstrom
Card: FN #023 (Rare)
Points: 6
Faction: Vikings
Keyword: Marine.
This is the first Marine we've seen since Barbary
Coast. Most Marines cost 7 points and have a +1
against one particular faction; Olof is an equal
opportunity slayer, so you save a point.
Marines are flexible - you can put them on a ship as
an improved Musketeer, or leave them on an island as
a mini-fort. Whatever you do, make sure Olof gets
plenty of action, because 6 points is a lot if he
doesn't do much. I can see him on one of the
Vikings' three-masted longships, giving it a seventh
cannon shot (now that's hurty!). If the longship is
about to lose its last mast, head for a wild island
and drop off Olof so he won't be lost, and he can
still take potshots at any ship that gets too close.
Another fun use for a Marine like Olof is to leave
him on your home island, to punish an enemy ship
that tries to land there and steal a treasure. The
Vikings have a lot of ships like that, and if your
enemies like Vikings, Olof may get some useful
target practice without ever leaving home. Or you
can put him on a gold ship, and drop him on a wild
island that has more gold than you can carry. He'll
guard it for you until you return.
Useful crew, fair price, average marks.

Name: Shayna Duex
Card: FN #021 (Rare)
Points: 6
Faction: Vikings
Link : Asgard, Lars Valgard
Ability: This ship may move and shoot using the same
move action. Once per turn, you may reroll any die
roll you make for this ship; you must use the second
die roll result.
A few days ago, I reviewed a chick ship (El Rosal).
Today, I review a chick. But I won't say that too
loudly. Shayna Duex looks like one tough customer,
even if she does pluck her eyebrows.
She gives two very useful abilities for a fighting
ship, Captain and Reroll. Similar crew for other
factions (Jonathan Haraden, Jordan Dumas,
Katsura-Chan) also go for 6 points, so her cost is
fair. Her linked ship, the Asgard, is a good place
for her - three good cannons (doubled) and the
ability to carry off multiple treasures if she wins
a boarding action. Shayna's Reroll can be very
useful when boarding, and her link frees up a cargo
space for gold.
Personally, I really like this kind of crew. I use
them as a combination Captain and Cannoneer, trading
a point for a cargo space, and if I need a reroll
for ramming or boarding, I can do that as well. If I
get into the Vikings, I'll be leaning hard on Shayna
Duex to win my battles.
