Link : Slipstream
Keyword: Expatriate
Ability: Once per turn, you may reroll any die roll
you make for this ship; you must use the second die
roll result.
This character has a curious mix of abilities. Not
bad, just odd. The reroll ability is a great one for
fighting and boarding. It's also good for dealing
with terrain, and if you're using mysterious
islands, it can be very useful indeed.
The Expatriate keyword lets you put this crew on any
ship; that's good.
It then turns that ship into a Merc ship; that's
bad. If you use Thane on his linked ship, it gets +1
on its mysterious-island rolls; that's good. But
Thane and the Slipstream together are expensive, and
don't give you much in return; that's bad.
Together, Thane Hartless and the Slipstream have one
clearly defined
role: to explore mysterious islands without worrying
about the consequences. If the linked-Expat's +1 on
the island roll doesn't save your skin, Thane's
reroll probably will. But 19 points (Slipstream,
Thane, and a Helmsman) is way too much to pay for
such a limited role.
Captain Hartless could see action on other ships,
but 5 points is too much for just a reroll.
Expatriate does nothing on most Merc ships, and if
your ship isn't a Merc, why would you give up your
ability to dock at your home island just to gain a
reroll? It doesn't make sense. I don't see Thane
Hartless going to sea very often.
Ability: Once per turn, you may re-roll any action
you make for this ship. You must use the second dice
roll result. 3.5/5
points 5, 1/5
Extra: Ex-patriot, link slipstream
I don't really like this guy, he costs too much. For
one point more, I could get Griffin, who has the
re-roll and captain abilties. Ex-patriot isn't good
either, since all nations already have a re-roller
that either costs less or is more effective, and, in
some cases both. The only ship in existent he can
fell good on is Slipstream, and even then it isn't
that good, since slipstream can have any crew of any
nation, so you could find AND get those better
re-rollers. That extra cargo space in the link is
what keeps this guy from getting the boot.
