Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: L'Hercule
Card: CC #069 (Uncommon)
Points: 22
Faction: France
Masts: 4 (rating: 4 / 5)
Cargo: 3 (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Moves: S+S (rating: 3 / 5)
Guns : 3S,2L,2L,3S (rating: 3.6 / 5)
Hit %: 233 (S), 133 (L)
Ability: This ship's cannons may not be eliminated
(masts still may be).
If derelict, she cannot shoot.
This ship's ability is consistently overpriced; if
you don't believe me, check out HMS Dreadnought (26
pts). On small ships, the ability is irrelevant --
they become derelict too easily. On a bigger ship
like L'Hercule, it becomes more valuable, since it's
unlikely the enemy will get all your masts in one
attack. But it's a sure thing he'll finish you off
on his second attack. Thus, in a pitched battle,
L'Hercule will get off one good four-gun salvo, and
that's about it.
If you can arrange it so you fight only one enemy at
a time, or if the enemy are all small ships, this
four-master could do some serious hurt.
Attack, back off, use a Shipwright to fix your
damage, repeat until all enemy ships are at the
bottom of the sea. If the enemy doesn't cooperate,
this ship is a waste of 22 points plus crew.
That crew has to include a Captain and should
include a Helmsman as well; as I mentioned, a
Shipwright would also be worthwhile. You won't be
able to exceed the ship's cost with the crew's cost,
but you'll quickly exceed your maximum point
allowance. That's this ship's only real problem, but
it's a big one.
