Okay, what can you do with a ship like this? Her
guns are as bad as anything I've ever seen on a
five-masted ship. Her special ability is purely
defensive. Her cargo is very good, but she's way too
slow to be an effective gold ship. Or is she?
Her price is very low for five masts, low enough to
consider using her for gold. Add a Helmsman, and you
have S+S speed and 5 cargo free. If you use her for
gold, the enemy will think twice before ramming and
boarding such a big ship. Gunfire can hurt her, but
it takes a lot of hurting to bring down five masts.
The Manila can almost guarantee a safe delivery of
five treasures each time she leaves port.
If you'd rather use her as a fighter, you'll want
Luis Zuan on board.
4-rank cannons just about require the services of a
world-hater, and Luis also gives you the Captain
ability. You'll have little to fear from ramming and
boarding; you might even try a little boarding
yourself, since five masts make nice odds on a
boarding roll. Actually, any of the named Spanish
crew in the Mysterious Islands series would be
useful on this ship. La Manila won't be a terrific
fighter, but five guns for thirteen points is as
good as it gets.
This ship's advantages (low cost and good cargo)
balance out her drawbacks (low speed and poor
cannons). You can't use her like you'd use El
Acorazado, but she has a place in the fleet. And
she's a good-looking ship. I give her average marks.

La
Manila might be the biggest of the Spanish fleet in
Mysterious Islands but that is all she has going for
her. The inspiration for this ship must be old the
Spanish galleon. La Manilla has mediocre guns (only
a single L range cannon) and tries to make up for it
with quantity. She is also slow as molasses (S
movement, the only thing slower in this game is a
fort!). She does have a fairly large cargo hold,
which is good because we will need crew to get this
ship into fighting form. After the obligatory
Captain and helmsman we’ll need something to boost
the firepower (which will only make it a 50% chance
to hit with each gun). That leaves us with 3 cargo
spots and 5 points left for remaining crew. Unless I
get a crew that reduces point costs for all other
crew I’ll be leaving La Manila unpunched and at
home.
I may be new at this but I think I am not far off if
I give 2/5 for this mediocre gunship.
